Online Instruction Childhood Degree :: Accredited Universities

The Education Specialist in Early Childhood Education is a fully online program designed for those who are currently certified at the master’s level and who are seeking the opportunity to grow and develop professionally as transforming educators. Throughout the program students will gain a greater depth of knowledge relating to issues of diversity, curriculum assessment and development, theory and research, and pedagogy. Students will also develop expertise in written and oral communication skills which will prepare them to advocate more effectively for young children, their families, and the community.

Successful completion of the program will lead to eligibility for an upgrade of the candidate’s teaching certification to a T-6 certificate by the Georgia Professional Standards Committee. As part of the program, students also have the option to earn a GAPSC approved endorsement in Reading, ECE Math, ECE Science, or ESOL.

Accomplished faculty, individual attention, cohort program format and technological support are all hallmarks of this Ed.S. program and enhance the learning experience. The Tift College of Education collaborates with principals, teachers, human resource officials and other community members to ensure the relevancy of the Ed.S. program to classroom practice.

Students are admitted to the program twice a year during the summer (May) and fall (August) semesters.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the Ed.S. in Early Childhood Education program, applicants must hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on all graduate work attempted. Also, they must possess or be eligible for a master’s level certificate in Early Childhood Education.

International applicants

The TOEFL or IELTS is required for international applicants whose primary language is not English.All international students whose native language is not English must submit a Certificate of Proficiency from the Mercer University English Language Institute (ELI) or results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and Certificate of Proficiency from English as a Second Language (ELS) Language Center. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), and 80 for the internet-based test (IBT). English proficiency at ELS Level 112 is expected. The scores may not be more than two years old.

As an Early Childhood Education graduate, you will be prepared to pursue positions at public or private schools, daycare centers, kindergarten institutions or community colleges, such as curriculum developer, manager or administrator, early childhood consultant and early childhood case manager.

The Early Childhood Education specialization is designed to help you develop an understanding of the breadth and depth of early childhood education research, curriculum and policy. This specialization is competency-based and emphasizes research and teaching across a broad spectrum of topics, including childhood development, literature, program administration, curriculum and assessment and stakeholder partnerships. As a graduate, you will be prepared to pursue leadership positions in schools, higher education organizations and research settings in various areas, including educational assessment, curricula development, education research, administration and instruction, education policy, teacher training, teaching and advocacy addressing children from birth through age 8.

Admission to Northcentral University's Doctoral Degree program in the School of Education requires a conferred Master's degree from an accredited academic institution. Applicants holding other doctoral degrees (MD, DO, DC, DDS, DVM, etc.) may be admitted into a doctoral program at the discretion of the Dean.

The MS In Early Childhood is intended for teachers who already have initial certification in either of these areas. In either an online, or campus-based format, the program focuses on responsive teaching and empowerment for students and teachers. Newly revised in 2013, the coursework brings together current research and policy to prepare teachers to teach children from Birth to Grade 6. Coursework addresses the key components of literacy and content areas instruction, including literacy development, children's literature, science, mathematics, social studies, writing instruction, literacy engagement, strategic literacy instruction, assessment, data-based decision making, critical literacy, family partnerships, and the Common Core Standards. Initial teaching certification in Early Childhood or Childhood is required for admission into this program. The program provides the MS degree needed for professional certification in New York State in the area of your original initial certificate (i.e., Childhood or Early Childhood). If you are interested in obtaining your literacy certification, please consider the MS in Literacy degree.

The educational specialist (Ed.S.) degree is available through a post-master’s graduate program that provides students an area of educational specialization with emphasis on practice.

The Ed.S. degree in Curriculum & Instruction: Early Childhood Education is designed to meet the needs of individuals involved with the curriculum, teaching, and supervision aspects of early childhood education. The degree provides patterns of study for teachers and supervisors who want an education beyond the master’s degree as a specialist, but who are not interested in a doctoral degree.

Entry Requirements

Admission requirements to the Ed.S. program in early childhood education include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution and a master’s degree from an accredited institution.

1. The letters of recommendation are expected from academic professionals to support the applicant's ability and character to succeed in the graduate degree.

2. A statement of purpose is required to demonstrate writing ability and to describe the applicant’s goals and how the educational specialist degree supports those goals.
