This degree ensures that students will learn about the "big picture" through exposure to four historical perspectives, while allowing them to tailor the major to individual needs during the junior and senior years. Students in this program are exposed to the social impact, consequences, and changes of various pivotal historical events. They learn critical and analytical thinking, and effective writing and research methods. Students graduating from this program apply their skills and abilities as curators and archivists or in professions involving research, writing, editing, advocacy, politics, and historical preservation.

The bachelor’s degree program is open to students who possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

All students who enroll in the bachelor's degree program must enroll in COLL100 - Foundations of Online Learning as their first course.

Entry Requirements

Students seeking admission to an online undergraduate program must meet the following admission requirements prior to the start of the first course at Ashford University:

Have a regular high-school diploma earned through college preparatory or regular high school courses or GED equivalency recognized by the Department of Education of the state in which it was earned, completed secondary school through home schooling as defined by state law, or earned an equivalent to a US high school diploma at an international high school according to approved Foreign Evaluation services. An earned IEP or Special Education Diploma or Certificate of Completion based upon IEP goals does not meet the regular high school diploma requirement for admission to Ashford University. If no high school degree was earned, applicants who have successfully completed at least a two-year program that is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited postsecondary institution, as defined by Ashford University transfer credit policies, may be admitted.

Be 22 years of age or older, or be exempt from this requirement by meeting one of the following criteria:

- Earned a minimum of 30 transferable credits* as defined by Ashford University transfer credit policies;

- Earned an Associate’s degree or higher from a regionally or approved nationally accredited institution; or

- Seeking readmission to Ashford University after withdrawal from a degree program; or

- Current degree-seeking student at Ashford University requesting to change majors.

Have the ability to study English indicated by one of the following:

- Achieved a recognized high school diploma or equivalent in which the primary language of instruction was English

- Received a GED that was taken in English

- A minimum of 30 credits have been earned from regionally or approved nationally accredited colleges/universities in the United States or equivalent in which the primary language of instruction was English; or

- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination taken within the past two (2) years. A minimum score of 500 paper-based or 61 Internet-based is required. Copies of official scores must be submitted prior to provisional enrollment, and official scores must be submitted for full admission.

The Bachelor of Arts in history is an interdisciplinary degree designed to give students an understanding of the development of human society and the political, social, economic, and cultural dynamics that influence today’s complex world.

In today’s competitive marketplace, there is significant and increasing demand for professionals with critical thinking and writing skills, and individuals who possess the unique ability to thoughtfully evaluate conflicting pieces of information. This program will prepare students for successful careers in business, education and public service. Our graduates will also find a distinct edge in pursuing a graduate degree in fields such as business, history, justice studies, law and public administration.

As part of the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, we offer one of the largest and strongest history programs in the country. Students can select either the United States or world as their geographic emphasis area. The curriculum is firmly based in the humanities and involves the critical, historical and comparative study of texts, practices and contexts, as well as the natural and social sciences. This is a transfer-friendly program that is ideal for students looking to complete their degree, or for those with family and career responsibilities.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must successfully complete ASU competency requirements. Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 in any subject area. Most competencies may also be met by test scores or college courses.

English - 4 years (composition/literature based)
Math - 4 years - Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and one course requiring Algebra II as a prerequisite.
Laboratory Science - 3 years total (1 year each from any of the following areas are accepted: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Integrated Sciences, and Physics)
Social Science - 2 years (including one year American History)
Foreign Language - 2 years (same language)
Fine Arts - 1 year

Applicants must also meet at least one of the following:

Top 25% in high school graduating class
3.0 GPA in competency courses (4.0 = A)
ACT 22 (24 nonresidents)*
SAT Reasoning 1040 (1110 nonresidents)*

*ASU does not require the writing portion of these tests.

All students who don’t meet the above standards will be evaluated through a process called Individual Review. Through this process Undergraduate Admissions will review all available information about a student’s application, carefully considering all aspects of a student’s academic background and accomplishments. Submission of an ACT or SAT test score is highly recommended. In some cases, additional information might be requested.

The study of history develops out of the perennial interest that people have about their past. History explores the events that shape societies. Studying the record of the past opens insights into what happens today, and what may happen tomorrow. The fundamental importance of history explains why it is among the most venerable of the liberal arts, and why it continues to attract new scholars.

The history major begins with a broad foundation, then allows a student to build upon it with courses that most closely match his or her interests. Students take 15 hours of required courses and choose electives in the categories of European history, Social history, American history, and World history.
