CSU's Bachelor of Health Science (Food and Nutrition) graduates will bring an understanding of food and nutrition into a range of health, education, industrial and research areas.

CSU's Bachelor of Health Science (Food and Nutrition) provides graduates with a level of knowledge, understanding and skill in appropriate aspects of food and nutrition and its scientific basis to enable them to work in multidisciplinary teams in a range of health and industrial settings.

The course covers the following aspects:

Physiology
Human biochemistry
Human nutrition
Food intake and meal planning
Community and public health
Genetics

To make sure you are experienced in using the equipment and techniques found in the workplace, our facilities include food science laboratories, a commercial food preparation laboratory and a campus-based nutrition clinic.

This course is designed for those interested in our relationship with and management of animals in a rapidly changing world. The course has three specialist majors focusing on: 1) livestock production; 2) wildlife management; and 3) horses and dogs.

Students will study the basic sciences and applied biological sciences before undertaking specialist units. The course also develops practical skills.

The Livestock Production major has streams enabling specialisation in sheep and wool science, animal health and nutrition, animal genetics, intensive animal production and consulting and advisory services.

The Canine and Equine major is suited to students with interests in companion animals. Students will learn the fundamentals of animal nutrition, physiology, genetics and human-animal interactions before specialising in their chosen fields. Students in this major will be well placed for a career in the petfood industry, detector dog agencies, canine control and the equine and racehorse industries.

The Wildlife Management major is designed for students seeking a career in the management and conservation of wildlife or management of feral animals, ecological basis for the stable, threatened and nuisance status of animal species together with theoretical and practical skills in animal nutrition, reproduction, genetics breeding, health and welfare are covered.

The program includes four units of equine related study from the University of Queensland which is completed from UNE on a cross-institutional basis.

Recommended studies: Biology and/or Chemistry.

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the Faculty offers a Foundation unit in Chemistry and Mathematics.

Research in health promotion; education and advancement; public health policy; household ecology encompassing sustainability, decision making and community involvement; social determinants of health with a focus on gender, ethnicity and inequality. Public Health research in nutrition includes measurement and evaluation of food sources; nutritional assessment; exercise and behaviour; sports nutrition; diet and disease with particular interest in cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and osteoporosis.

A bachelor’s degree in Food and Nutrition from The University of Alabama focuses on the relationship between nutrition and human health. This program is beneficial because it is offered exclusively by distance, making it convenient for working adults.

Students will learn how to translate the science of nutrition into the best way to treat and prevent disease in individuals and communities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of registered dietitians is expected to increase nine percent during the 2008-2018 projection period. Job growth will result from an increasing emphasis on disease prevention through improved dietary habits. This focus will boost demand for nutritional counseling and treatment in outpatient facilities, hospitals, residential care facilities, schools, community health programs, and home healthcare agencies. As the profession continues to grow, entrepreneurial RDs can also be found working in sports nutrition, private practice, food science, journalism, and corporate wellness.

Our program is an ACEND approved didactic program and upon completion you will be eligible to apply to dietetic internships. After completion of a dietetic internship, you will then be eligible to sit for the Registered Dietitian exam and become an RD upon passing the exam.

This is an advanced course in human nutrition which draws content from related disciplines such as food science, biochemistry, physiology, epidemiology, psychology, sociology and politics and policy.

Throughout the course you will develop:
advanced knowledge of human nutrition and the complexity of current issues relating to food and human health;
an understanding of the biological, social and policy related aspects of human nutrition;
skills that will enable you to practise effectively as a nutritionist in a range of employment settings including the food industry, public health nutrition, private practice and business environments; and
skills in evaluating the findings of human nutrition studies and undertaking research.
This course provides you with the opportunity to undertake a diverse range of elective study options, thus giving you the ability to pursue topic areas that align with your interests and career aspirations. Entry Requirements

Applicants for the Master of Human Nutrition should have completed a three year bachelor degree in any discipline or equivalent qualifications or relevant professional experience. (A science subject at Year 12 level or equivalent is also recommended.) Selection is based primarily on academic merit.
