The three alternative pathways of the MSc Finance programme enable you to select a study path best suited to your objectives and skills. The MSc Finance (major: Economic Policy) is designed principally for postgraduates working on economic policy in government, central banks, other public organisations, international institutions and consultancy.

In order to be considered for registration applicants must have:

Either

(a) a bachelor's degree in finance, economics, or other appropriate discipline, from a UK university or other institution acceptable to the University or an equivalent international qualification (qualifications in other subjects will be assessed on their merits)

Or
(b) previous education and experience without a UK bachelor’s degree, or international equivalent that satisfies the University as a qualification on the same level as a UK bachelor's degree approved under (a) for this purpose, and which has included suitable preliminary training.

English Language Requirements

All applicants must have a high level of English language ability in reading, writing and study skills equivalent to a score of 7.0 in the IELTS test, or 7 in both reading and writing; or a score of 600+ in the TOEFL paper-based test of English, with at least 5.0 in the test of written English; and in the TOEFL internet-based test, you will need a score of 100+, with 25+ in the written English test. Applicants may be asked to provide evidence of language ability as tested by the British Council or another registered body.

Students majoring in Economics develop theoretical and analytical skills useful for decision making. These are applied to a range of topical, significant policy issues. Economics focuses on complex interrelationships, whereby a change in one area will have repercussions elsewhere. Most of life’s important questions are of this nature. Economics training at Massey University will enable you to analyse these matters in a realistic fashion.

The BBS (Economics) degree provides a broad and well-rounded education in business. Selecting this option provides you with a strong grounding in Economics, but in a programme that is less rigorous and specialised than the Bachelor of Applied Economics.

In addition to Economics training, you will gain a broad understanding of other business disciplines such as finance, banking, management, and information systems. If you see yourself as a future dynamic business leader who will use a solid knowledge of economics to help ensure the success of your company, this is the degree for you.

The Economics major in the BBS degree programme has few compulsory requirements and lots of flexibility. It builds on a standard core of economic theory, with additional papers chosen from a wide range of electives, allowing students to specialise in any of a number of areas. In addition to quantitative methods and more advanced theory, these include international trade, resource and environmental economics, financial economics, managerial economics, and public policy.

While you may not intend to major in Economics, many students have found that a selection of Economics papers can be a useful complement to their chosen major. However, if you think you might want to pursue postgraduate studies in Economics, it’s very important to plan early and seek academic advice. In consultation with us, you can design your Economics major to meet your interests and career objectives.

Entry Requirements

There are no special entry requirements for the Economics major beyond those that qualify you for study at the University. A major in Economics can be taken internally at the Manawatu and Albany campuses; it can also be taken extramurally but with a more limited range of papers. In order to widen your choice of papers, or to fit in with your other commitments, you may opt for a mix of internal and extramural papers.

The MSc Finance (major: Quantitative Finance) is designed principally for postgraduates whose work in banks and other financial institutions requires knowledge of statistical (particularly econometric) and quantitative approaches to risk and derivatives. It is particularly suitable if you have a first degree in engineering, applied science, applied mathematics, economics, or similar subjects, but also suitable for others with quantitative skills.

Deakin’s Bachelor of Commerce is one of the most flexible business programs available at any Australian university. Bachelor of Commerce graduates will acquire a broad knowledge in all aspects of business.

After a first year of study in key business disciplines, you can choose from a wide range of major sequences in areas such as accounting, business information systems, commercial law, economics, finance, human resource management, management and marketing. You can also choose from specialised areas offered by other faculties such as journalism, sociology, politics and policy studies, languages and psychology (subject to satisfying entry requirements).

You have the option of undertaking a business internship program as part of this course, providing hands on experience in your chosen major sequence.

Applicants should have successfully completed VCE or equivalent. Prerequisites are units 3 and 4 a study score of at least 25 in English (ESL) or 20 in any other English.
