It teaches you to develop critical thinking skills and a reflective approach to special education within the early years setting. You learn about the development, needs and experience of young children, and young children faced with special educational needs. It considers the context in which children are defined, diagnosed and labelled as having special education needs. Modules enable you to gain a holistic appreciation of the factors that influence the experience of childhood, as well as the sociology of childhood, early years legislation and global inequalities in childhood, with the addition of concepts of equal opportunity, inclusion and children’s rights. The programme explores how children and childhood are understood from a range of academic and professional perspectives, and enables you to understand the philosophies, beliefs and attitudes that inform these perspectives; it also investigates the significance of early childhood across cultures and societies.
