This MSc offers a comprehensive guide to all aspects of drug design. The postgraduate Masters in Science (MSc) programme is taught as either a classic one-year programme, or delivered through blended learning on a two-year part-time basis.

The MSc degree teaches how fundamental science is applied to the discovery and development of medicines. The programme was designed and conceived by industry experts in drug discovery and will be delivered and assessed by experts from both industry and the university. This advanced-level academic qualification will provide expert preparation for those who wish to pursue and/or further a career in drug discovery, or wish to proceed to a higher degree (PhD).

Two factors underpinned the development of this programme:

(1) Graduates in pharmacology and related biology degrees require understanding of how fundamental science learned at university is linked to the design and development of modern medicines.

(2) With increasing specialisation of pharmaceutical research into zones of expertise it is difficult for new graduates to gain a full understanding how their work and data fits into the ‘drug discovery process’.

This programme will:

1. Produce graduates trained in the processes by which fundamental science is linked to the design and development of modern medicines.

2. Teach students an understanding of the drug discovery process.

3. Provide students with the experience of critically appraising the research questions and techniques that are routine in the workplace.

4. Provide expert preparation for students who wish to pursue a career in drug discovery, or wish to proceed to a higher degree (PhD).

The modern pharmaceutical industry encompasses the development of ‘biologics’ (for example antibodies or protein hormones), as much as it does traditional small-molecule drug discovery.

You will study the design and potential uses of different families of proteins and will examine the experiences of successful entrepreneurs in the field who have been involved in the commercialization of bio pharmaceuticals.

Your research project will focus on the early phases of an industrial biologic design programme.

A UK 2:1 degree, or its international equivalent in biotechnology, biochemistry, chemistry, medicine, molecular biology, pharmacology or related sciences. Other scientific backgrounds are considered on a case-by-case basis.

The CSE Master's degree is a joint program between the Colleges of Computing, Sciences and Engineering.

Georgia Tech’s Master’s degree in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) prepares students for careers in industry, government, and academia. Students will be well prepared for position in industry in areas such as engineering software systems, web technologies (e.g. search or analysis of social networks), software for consumer product and drug design, and financial engineering, to mention a few. Graduates will be well prepared for positions in government (e.g., national laboratories) and with government contractors in software and systems for modeling and simulation, systems integration, data mining and visualization, high performance computing, and computational modeling. Graduates will be well prepared for staff positions in academia involving research concerned with the development and application of computational models in engineering, the sciences, and computing.

The interdisciplinary CSE MS degree program is jointly offered by the colleges of Computing, Engineering and Sciences. Participating units from these colleges include the Computational Science and Engineering Division; Department of Biomedical Engineering; and schools of Aerospace Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Mathematics.
