Show More Today’s tech-dependent world has numerous job opportunities for those interested in computer science careers. Rising software development needs for embedded systems and electronic components, a growing emphasis on cyber security, and an increase in cloud computing systems are just a few examples of industry trends driving demand for those with an advanced education in computer science. But, how do you know a Master of Computer Science is right for you versus a degree in computer information systems or computer engineering? Computer science is the study of how computational processes and devices represent, store, and manipulate information. It involves the development, and analysis of algorithms, which are instructions (or software) that tell a computer how to solve particular problems correctly and efficiently. Colorado State University’s online computer science degree sits at the nexus of mathematics, science, and engineering, requiring mathematical reasoning and logic, scientific methodology for knowledge creation and refinement, and engineering techniques for building hardware and software. Find more on what computer science encompasses here. Colorado State’s expert faculty provide a professional-level understanding of advanced topics in computer science for those in the field looking to enhance their skills for career advancement, as well as individuals interested in moving into the field. Approximately 70% of CSU Master of Computer Science students have job offers upon graduation. Graduates are highly sought after by major high-tech, computer software, and aerospace companies, like Microsoft, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Motorola, Raytheon, and Lockheed-Martin. In addition, employment opportunities are rapidly growing in small and medium sized companies. Through CSU’s computer science curriculum, students benefit from faculty research and development experience by gaining specialized knowledge in the areas of:
Networking and security You may start this computer science degree without being admitted to Colorado State University by earning one of our computer science certificates of completion in Computer Systems and Security, Embedded Systems, or Software Engineering. Certificates offer valuable credentials without the full commitment of a degree program. Credits required for each of the certificates are core courses for the degree, and will count toward the degree after formal admission, per University transfer policy. However, successful completion of the computer science courses or a certificate does not guarantee admission to the degree program. Entry RequirementsThe computer science (M.C.S.) degree requires applicants to have the following: - A bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited institution. - A demonstrated understanding of computer organization/architecture, data structures and algorithms, program/software design methodology, theoretical foundations, and operating systems design concepts. - A 3.0 GPA on all undergraduate coursework and a GPA of at least 3.2 in computer science and mathematics coursework. - GRE test scores are recommended, but not required for admission. Applicants should submit - Transcripts - Resume - Statement of Purpose. - TOEFL scores (only international applicants) The minimum score for applicants is 92 on the internet-based test (580 on the paper-based test or 6.5 on the IELTS).
