Show More The Masters of Dental Public Health (MDPH) is a distance-learning course that is fully integrated within the highly successful MPH course offered by the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences. This is a web-based programme hosted within the School of Dentistry at the University of Manchester. The MDPH programme provides a combination of interactive online learning and project work to help students to develop a critical evidence-based approach to planning services and improving oral health at a population level. A number of pathways can be followed through this programme leading to different awards, as follows:
Master of Dental Public Health (MDPH)
Course units may also be taken singly. Entry RequirementsA degree in dentistry or a non-clinical subject and preferably two years of working experience. Normally the non-clinical degree will be in a science or social science subject (minimum 2:1 or equivalent GPA) and the individual will be working in some area with a link to oral health. The degree held must be from a recognised institution. Applicants with other qualifications, research or professional experience will be considered for admission on an individual basis, although they may be required to register for a diploma in the first instance.
English language requirements Where an applicant's certificate of education is from an approved English-speaking country, they are exempt from having to take the English test. Applicants whose degree certificate is not from an approved country, but are resident in an approved country for 36 months before the Programme, are also exempt. Approved countries:
UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man IELTS level 7.0 overall with level 7.0 in reading and writing specifically TOEFL 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or minimum of 100 (Internet-based test) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English Grade B
Other entry requirements
Students should expect to spend, on average, approximately 10-15 hours a week for each course unit studied. Part-time students usually enrol on a minimum of one course unit per semester, so that the coursework is completed within four years. However, the course can be taken at the student's own pace, provided it is completed within five years. The MRes programme provides a combination of interactive online learning and project work to help students to develop a critical evidence-based approach to planning services and improving oral health at a population level. The MRes will develop skills for health services research and be especially suitable for those who wish to study for a PhD subsequently but have limited experience of research. The MRes comprises 6 course units and a dissertation [180 credits]:
Biostatistics [15 credits] Qualitative Research Methods [15 credits] is a prerequisite for any students planning a qualitative dissertation. Students are advised to take at least two core course units in the first year of the course for part-time students, or in the first semester for full-time students. Entry RequirementsAcademic entry qualification overview There are two routes of entry: A recognised primary degree in a dental subject and a preferred minimum of two years post qualification experience A degree (minimum 2:2) in a non-clinical subject and preferably two years of working experience. Show More The BSDH online degree completion program offered by East Tennessee State University is one of the oldest and most successful of its kind. The Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission granted final approval for the BSDH Online allowing acceptance of the first class in the fall of 2001. As of 2014, the program has 153 graduates in 25 states. The completion degree is designed for students who have earned an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene and want an expanded knowledge base in their chosen profession. Students completing this program will gain additional expertise in current approaches to supportive periodontal therapy and soft tissue management, meeting the needs of geriatrics and other underserved populations, community and rural health program design implementation and evaluation, pain management, teaching strategies for health professionals, and skills needed to responsibility build an evidence-based practice. Additionally, students become part of a community of lifelong learners enriching each other's learning experiences. The program is research and writing based, giving students the opportunity to build oral and written communication skills as well as technology skills that will benefit them as practitioners, in advancing or changing career paths, or furthering their education. Prospective students must meet the requirements of the university for graduation with a bachelor's degree. In other words, all general education core requirements must be completed in addition to the online dental hygiene courses. Courses from other universities and colleges may be transferred to ETSU. Four of our BS completion degree students have presented posters at national conferences having been chosen as student merit award winners by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. They are Laura Teran and Barbara George who each presented in Little Rock, AR in 2006, Cathy Holtman who presented her poster in Pittsburgh, PA in 2011, and Angela Haynes who presented in 2013 in Huntsville, AL. Laura's award winning project was a bilingual dental education project for a multi-cultural kindergarten. Barbara re-invigorated a smoking cessation program for young adults at a Job Corp and Cathy provided an outreach dental education project for underserved young moms. Angela's target audience was a group of developmentally disabled adults for whom she provided dental screenings, hygiene services, patient education, and worked with a local dentist to provide all the participants the treatment they needed on an on-going basis. We are proud to have our students' outstanding work recognized nationally. Entry RequirementsEligible hygienists must have earned an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited US or Canadian institution. Admission to the BSDH degree completion program requires the following information be submitted for consideration and selection: Evidence of admission to ETSU. Transcripts that include proof of graduation from an accredited dental hygiene program. A current US or Canadian dental hygiene license. A brief resume outlining work history in dental hygiene.
