Communication disorders stem from an array of impairments in the speech, voice, resonance, fluency, swallowing, and language processes. Disorders of human communication affect millions of Americans and cut across the entire life span. An estimated 1 in 6 individuals will suffer from communication impairment in their lifetime. Speech-language pathologists identify, prevent, evaluate, and treat individuals with communication disorders. The growing number of people with communication impairments reflects a need for qualified SLPs to serve the populace. Our program prepares individuals for a career in SLP in a variety of educational, hospital and private settings. English Language Proficiency: Applicants must demonstrate sufficient English language skills for admission into a JIU degree program by meeting one or more of the following criteria: - Test of English as a Foreign Language (link is external) (TOEFL®): Evidence of having scored at least 61 on the Internet-based Test (iBT™), 173 on the Computer-based Test (CBT), or 500 on the Paper-based Test (PBT). Results must be sent directly from the testing service by selecting JIU as the recipient along with entering our Designation Code (DI) of 7463, OR - International English Language Testing System (link is external) (IELTS): Reading and writing band scores must be 5.5 or higher with no band less than 5.0. Entry RequirementsStudents seeking admission to an online undergraduate program must meet the following admission requirements prior to the start of the first course at Ashford University: Have a regular high-school diploma earned through college preparatory or regular high school courses or GED equivalency recognized by the Department of Education of the state in which it was earned, completed secondary school through home schooling as defined by state law, or earned an equivalent to a US high school diploma at an international high school according to approved Foreign Evaluation services.
