For those who are practising bridge engineers, the programme is an opportunity for you to update your knowledge of current design and assessment codes and guidelines, and to familiarise yourself with developments in new techniques for the design, construction and management of bridges.

The Bridge Engineering programme provides a wide range of modules addressing the whole-life analysis of bridge structures. It is also possible to take optional modules from some of our other study streams, covering areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, water engineering and construction management.

Successful completion of this programme will aid you in pursuing a career as a bridge engineer with either a consultancy, a specialist contractor or a local authority.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of 60 per cent in an honours degree in civil engineering accredited to CEng, or a minimum of 70 per cent in an honours degree in civil engineering accredited to IEng. Overseas equivalent qualifications are also welcome. Alternatively, at least five years’ relevant industrial experience (preferably codified design) or a professional qualification (for example, CEng).

The Civil Engineering programme aims to provide graduate engineers with advanced capabilities and in-depth knowledge in a range of specialised aspects of civil engineering. It is also designed to update the technical skills of practising engineers engaged in the planning, design, construction and operation of civil engineering works and to contribute to a personal professional development programme.

This programme is particularly useful in providing the necessary further learning for engineers working in the construction industry who hold related first degrees such as engineering geology or construction management.

Five study streams can be accessed by students on the Civil Engineering programme – Bridge Engineering, Construction Management, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering and Water Engineering.

The programme is organised and delivered by University staff, as well as practising engineers from consultancies and local authorities.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for a master's program at NJIT, you must have completed a four-year undergraduate program accredited in the United States or its equivalent and demonstrate superior academic achievement in an appropriate discipline.

We look for students who placed in the top half of their graduating class and department, with a cumulative GPA no lower than 2.8 on a 4.0 scale.

The GMAT is required for all applicants to graduate programs within the School of Management.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required for all international applicants not holding a degree from a United States post-secondary institution. The minimum score required is 79 for the Internet-based TOEFL exam, 213 for the computer-based TOEFL exam, or 550 for the paper-based TOEFL exam. A minimum score of 6.5 with no sub-score lower than 6.0 is required for the IELTS exam.

The Bachelor of Engineering will enable you to develop technical knowledge and skills in engineering as well as enhance your problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills. The Bachelor of Engineering incorporates project-based learning so you can apply the theory you learn to real-life scenarios, such as designing a portable footbridge or automated horse-walker. You will experience both formal and informal learning environments including workshops, lectures and project studios.

Choose to study civil, electrical, mechanical, mechatronic or mining engineering with the first year of the program being generic to all specalisations. This allows you to experience each different area of engineering before you choose a particular path to follow.
