Online Blood Science Degree :: Accredited Universities

This MSc distance-learning course is designed to promote a deep understanding of the emerging mixed disciplinary area of blood science. You will examine different theoretical perspectives, methodological approaches, research interests and practical applications within the subject area, as an independent learner.

Designed with input from current practitioners in the field, the course is suitable for biomedical science practitioners and graduates of biomedical or related life sciences. The programme covers areas relevant to staff working within or wishing to work in blood science departments within pathology.

Delivered as a flexible distance-learning programme through our e-Portal WebLearn, you will be able to continue to work whilst studying. The self-guided eLearning materials have been specially designed to support your engagement with the course content.

Each module has a module leader who is responsible for developing the curriculum and coordinating the production of the eLearning materials. Some sessions are ‘broadcast live’ with modules running face-to-face so you can engage with tutors, lecturers and other students. You can also contact your module leader and discuss ideas with other students via email, discussion boards, and during live peer-to-peer support sessions.

Your final research project is to be conducted in your place of work with joint supervision provided by your laboratory training officer and a member of staff from the School of Human Sciences. For those not working in a suitable laboratory, research may be conducted at London Metropolitan University with additional bench fees for materials.

The course is designed to support professionals in their career development in the healthcare profession, biomedical/biotechnology industry or in academia and has the potential to lead on to doctoral studies.

We have applied for accreditation from the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for 2014.

Entry Requirements

The normal standard of entry is a First or Second Class Honours first degree, or equivalent, in biomedical or life sciences subjects (that included appropriate biomedical content), although other less relevant subjects may be considered.

Lower grades, or non-degree qualifications supplemented by substantial work experience may be considered at interview.

Equivalent overseas qualifications will also be accepted; evidence of proficiency in English will also be required such as IELTS 7.0 (6.5 minimum in each component) or equivalent.

These courses build upon your previous experience in the biological, chemical or forensic sciences to develop your ability to analyse evidence in a myriad of forms. The emphasis is on accuracy, accountability and thoroughness, with the ultimate aim of providing results and interpretation for use by a court of law. The theory is delivered using Blackboard, an online virtual learning environment. This provides the flexibility of studying at your own pace and from any location in the world. Whilst using Blackboard, you will interact with other students on the course through online discussion groups and receive excellent support from tutors via e-mail or phone.

The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma courses are, respectively, the first third and first two thirds of the MSc course. At Postgraduate Certificate level, the emphasis is on the crime scene, specifically the collection, packaging and analysis of evidence such as fingermarks, footwear marks, documents, hairs, fibres and glass. Those continuing on to the Postgraduate Diploma will then change the emphasis of their studies to the chemical and biological analysis of evidence in forensic laboratories. During the Diploma, you will learn about a host of techniques, from the interpretation of blood spatter evidence to the analysis of illicit drugs, and from DNA profiling to the analysis of fire accelerants and drugs. The Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma stages of study each end in a two-week long residential practical programme, held at our Stoke-on-Trent campus. These summer workshops enable you to put your learning into practice and gain valuable experience in our state-of-the-art laboratories, crime scene house and mock courtroom facilities.

MSc students continue their studies beyond the Postgraduate Diploma stage, allowing specialisation in an aspect of forensic science. To complete the MSc, you will undertake a independent research project in an area either suggested by yourself or by choosing a title from a list of topics. In this work, the emphasis is on initiative and originality in the analysis and interpretation of results. The experimental part will usually be undertaken at our Stoke-on-Trent campus but, by agreement, could be based at the learner’s place of work or at a local institute.

The Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice (BSCJ) with a Specialization in Forensic Science degree provides students with an in-depth opportunity to explore the inner workings of medico-legal death investigation. With a heavy focus on such topics as theories of crime causation and victim crimes, this program prepares students with the knowledge and skills common to forensic science professionals.

Successful completion of AIU's Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program with a Specialization in Forensic Science can provide students with an industry focused look into conducting a death scene investigation and techniques in establishing identity and post mortem interval. Students will also gain an applicable foundation of industry-related knowledge and skills, including how to:

- Process a crime scene that includes collection, preservation and analysis of evidence, developing and lift fingerprints, blood spatter interpretation and write a narrative and scene description.

- Explain forensic science, postmortem interval, body changes, relevant medical history, traumatic injury, postmortem lab tests, and the features of death scene investigations.

- Define the roles and responsibilities of a forensic psychologist and their relationship with law enforcement officials.

- Use the techniques of criminal investigation involving criminal profiling, psychological autopsies, hypnosis, and lie detection.

- Understand computer crimes and investigation including use of incidence response tools, wireless network analysis and tool testing and analytical methodologies.

- Apply forensic computer knowledge pertaining to data modeling, data definition language, data manipulation language, operating systems, and networking knowledge to solve crimes.
