Medical scientists with training in pathology form the vital link in the chain of medical services through their work in hospital laboratories, private pathology laboratories and universities. They conduct laboratory analysis on blood, body fluids and tissues to provide vital scientific information for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Medical scientists in clinical measurement laboratories form another vital link in the chain of medical services by assessing the physiological functioning of the cardiovascular, nervous and respiratory systems. Results of these clinical measurements are used in accurate diagnosis and management of diseases such as atherosclerosis, epilepsy and asthma.

Medical scientists are seen as an integral part of the total healthcare team within hospitals, liaising with other health professionals and patients. They also form the key elements of research teams examining the efficacy of new treatments or developing new medicines and health care products.

CSU's Master of Medical Science provides the means for managers and scientific staff in medical science fields to expand their knowledge and understanding of underlying scientific concepts and recent research advances. Students who work as medical laboratory scientists can elect to complete the Pathology specialisation.

The Master of Medical Science is designed to meet the need for high-level education in medical science that does not focus exclusively on research. Graduates will develop detailed knowledge and understanding in medical science, together with analytical and problem solving skills for a range of individual employment and career opportunities.

The diversity of subjects allows students to undertake studies in financial, legal, human resource management and assimilation of scientific / clinical information, as well as specific discipline knowledge, through independent reading, research methodology and research expertise. The dissertation component enables the evolution of research skills, culminating in the preparation of a publishable journal article.

Students may elect to exit the course following the completion of the first four subjects and graduate with the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Science or Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Science (Pathology). Students may also elect to exit following the completion of the first eight subjects and graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Science or Postgraduate Diploma of Medical Science (Pathology).

This course is available to applicants with either a three-year or four-year undergraduate bachelor degree in a relevant area, or one of the following from CSU:

Graduate Certificate in Asthma and Respiratory Management

Graduate Certificate in Respiratory Science

Applicants wishing to complete the Pathology specialisation should have a minimum of two years' full-time employment as a medical laboratory scientist (or equivalent).

The mission of the online Master of Medical Science (MMS) Program is to provide students in affiliated physician assistant programs the opportunity to obtain graduate education in an affordable, flexible, online format. The MMS Program partners with seven physician assistant certification programs throughout the United States to offer an opportunity for those students to earn a master’s degree while they complete their clinical affiliations. This option permits these graduates to be competitive with entry level master’s degree physician assistant practitioners.
Consistent with the Franciscan tradition, the MMS Program encourages students to identify and address service needs, utilizing an evidence-based approach, while capitalizing on the student’s clinical competence. This unique strategy prepares graduates to creatively and effectively respond to complex practice issues, both now and in the future.

1. Completed baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution with minimum GPA of 2.5.

2. Transcript from PA Program to verify: status in program or graduation from program within 24 months

Admission to MMS program, if not completed concurrently with PA program, must be within 2 years of PA program graduation. An official transcript must be sent directly from the granting institution to the MMS Director.

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Specialisation) provides you with the opportunity to work in an exciting and rewarding career in one of three specialist areas including Clinical Investigation, Nutrition or Pathology. Each of the specialist areas explores relevant health and disease issues.

In order to help you determine your desired and most suited career path, you will gain exposure to foundation knowledge in sciences, study and research skills and health professional practice throughout your fi rst year of study in this degree. You will then be asked to decide on your specialist interest area at the end of your fi rst year.

Clinical physiologists (Clinical Investigation) measure function within the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system to exclude or confirm disease and then monitor progress in response to therapy.

Nutritionists are concerned with promoting and maintaining healthy lifestyle choices and preventing diet-related diseases in our communities. Nutritionists work in a number of industries including health promotion, public health, Indigenous health, food services, food or health corporations and engage in further study or research in public health nutrition, nutrition and dietetics, education, health service management, and environmental health.

Medical laboratory scientists, specialising in pathology, examine bodily samples to assist in making a diagnosis regarding a patient’s medical condition.

The program has been developed in consultation with key industry bodies and professionals and incorporates up to 480 hours of work integrated learning during each three year program. This ensures you graduate with the practical skills required to be career-ready and highly attractive to prospective employers. If you choose to study the program by distance education, you have the flexibility to fit study with your work and other lifestyle commitments. There is also an option to exit the degree after successful completion of the first 16 courses with an Associate Degree of Medical Science (Specialisation).

You are required to undertake up to 480 hours of compulsory off-campus clinical placements during the three years of the program within the professional practices and work-integrated learning courses.

This degree is designed for students wanting a science-based course that is focused towards career opportunities in the medical, paramedical and forensic fields. The areas of study include: basic science (biology, chemistry and mathematics) followed by human physiology, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry and microbiology and the integration and applications of disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and human physiology into biomedical science. Study is also available in bioethics and sociology of medicine.
