Online Bioethics Degree :: Accredited Universities

Over the past two decades, there has been increasing community concern about ethics in science, especially in the health sciences and the biological sciences.
The Master of Bioethics is a response to that concern, and will enable those taking it to deepen their understanding of ethical issues in health care and the biological sciences.
While the course is particularly well-suited to health care professionals and scientists who face complex ethical issues in their working lives, it will also be valuable for those involved in the formulation of public policy and law regarding these issues, as well as for anyone who simply wishes to explore issues of public concern in greater depth.
The course provides an interdisciplinary education that covers questions of life and death, ethical issues in patient care, legal issues in bioethics, and ethical issues in professional life.

Master of Bioethics students who have completed at least one semester of the course are eligible to apply for an annual fellowship of $9000 to work during the Australian summer as an intern in the Department of Ethics, Equity, Trade and Human Rights at the World Health Organisation in Geneva.

Entry Requirements

A bachelor's degree or equivalent, with at least a credit average in the final year.
Up to 24 points credit may be granted for applicants with a bachelor's degree with honours and a credit average in the final year in: medicine or any other health science; law; the biological or social sciences; or in a branch of the humanities such as philosophy OR a bachelor's degree or equivalent with at least a credit average in the final year in any of the field referred to above, plus three-years documented relevant practical experience OR a related graduate diploma with a credit average.

While undertaking your research, you will be supervised by an academic whose research expertise aligns with yours. Or, if geography and sustainability are more your thing, Dr Xuan Zhu, whose expertise includes Geographical Information Systems (GIS) theory, techniques and applications, may be the academic supervisor for you.

When completed, your research should make a significant contribution to the current body of knowledge on your chosen topic.

You may also choose to continue on to a PhD given your new-found skills in applying, clarifying, critiquing and interpreting knowledge.

Entry Requirements

The minimum qualifications for admission to 100% research master's candidature are:

a four year Australian or New Zealand bachelor's degree with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above) in an honours year (normally with a research component in the fourth year); or

an Australian or New Zealand master's preliminary qualification with a significant research component and with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above); or

an Australian or New Zealand coursework master's degree with a significant research component graded at a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above), and an overall result of upper H2B or above; or

an Australian or New Zealand research master's degree with an overall result of a minimum upper H2B (mark of 65 or above); or

qualifications or experience that the Graduate Research Committee considers to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above.

Complementing your social work studies with an arts degree gives you the opportunity to explore ideas around social justice and politics with a keen critical eye. We offer more than 50 distinct study areas in everything from bioethics to women's studies. Whatever you choose, you will learn the kind of transferable skills that are equally applicable to a profession in social work - communication, research, analysis, persuasiveness, and the ability to change and grow.

The course aims to develop skills necessary for research by studying the methodological, theoretical and ethical issues that underpin social work research. You are provided with the same learning and practice opportunities as students in the pass degree. In the honours program, you are expected to develop and complete a research project that will include a critical literature review, ethics approval, and a 10,000-12,000 word thesis.

Our arts degree is flexible, so you can build your ideal course. There are no compulsory units. Choose from our broad suite of studies and complete at least one major, one minor and a first-year sequence

This degree is designed for students wanting a science-based course that is focused towards career opportunities in the medical, paramedical and forensic fields. The areas of study include: basic science (biology, chemistry and mathematics) followed by human physiology, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry and microbiology and the integration and applications of disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and human physiology into biomedical science. Study is also available in bioethics and sociology of medicine.

Recommended studies: Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics

For students without the recommended background knowledge, the School offers Foundation units in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
