Development Studies is concerned with the understanding and analysis of processes which are transforming people's lives throughout the world. Development Studies seeks to understand differences, examine key development issues and ideas, and introduce skills to help solve development problems.

In Development Studies you study a number of different subjects, enabling you to grasp the complexities involved in understanding the differences countries face in solving development problems.

Three papers form the basis for Development Studies. The first paper introduces you to the field of development studies and forms a basis for the more advanced papers. The two advanced papers examine the nature of development and underdevelopment, and the concepts, processes, practices, and strategies for sustainable development.

Geography explores the relationships between people, places and environments.

As our worlds have become increasingly interconnected, fast-paced and more complex due to technological and social change; symptoms of this speed and complexity include disconnectivity, restrictions on mobility and competition for resources. This makes Geography more relevant than ever.

You will learn how to integrate various perspectives in social research and natural science to identify practical solutions to issues surrounding: population growth; food security; migration; natural hazards; climate change; global cities; sustainable development; health and wellbeing; power and place; and, the emerging creative economies.

Geography is offered as part of the Bachelor of Arts. You can enhance your studies with a secondary major or choose from a range of elective units to support your career goals.

When coupled with Economics you can complete this major as part of our Bachelor of Arts or our Bachelor of Commerce. Your choice will determine your core units.

You can also study this major as part of a Science and Arts double degree.

The functions and principles of management within arts and cultural organisations are the focus of this course. It examines the role of arts management in creating opportunities for arts and cultural organisations to be vital, viable and responsive to stakeholders, as well as the critical role of arts marketing in ensuring the arts engage diverse audiences and stakeholders. The Masters program also explores the role of cultural projects and events in creating vibrant and dynamic cities and destinations, along with the financial reporting and analysis work that underpins all organisations and programs.

As with the Graduate Certificate in Arts and Entertainment Management, students will gain the skills and knowledge to provide leadership and direction to the arts in Australia; contribute to the growing internationalisation of the arts; direct vibrant and sustainable arts organisations; and enable innovative programs that provide participatory opportunities for arts engagement. Study for the Masters program is more extensive, also providing opportunities to examine governance, entrepreneurship, strategy and human resource management.

Study within this course combines both the theory and practice of arts management, through a combination of reading, research and practical assignments. The Masters program offers students the opportunity to engage with a range of industry representatives, gain exposure to the work of cutting edge practitioners and thinkers, and integrate their work and learning. Students are also able to build on their practical skills and industry experience through an internship.

Within the Masters program students are able to specialise in areas of arts management such as audience development, marketing, and cultural heritage and tourism.

Entry Requirements

Completion of a tertiary program equivalent to not less than 4 years of full-time study at a university or other approved educational institution, or completion of a tertiary program equivalent to not less than 3 years of full-time study at a university or other educational institution and 3 years relevant work experience, or for those without a degree, a graduate diploma in a cognate area plus 5 years minimum relevant work experience. Normally applicants will not be granted Credit for Prior Learning towards the 8 credit point masters.
