CSU's Master of Arts (Honours) is a research program applicable across a wide variety of disciplines, wherein the student, with the aid of a supervisory team, will develop a proposal and undertake focused research culminating with the submission of a thesis.

Priority areas for the Master of Arts (Honours) by research and thesis include Australian history, Australian literature, communication and culture, drama, fine arts, justice studies and police studies, professional and applied ethics, psychology, sociology, rural social studies, social work, social welfare and social policy, and theology.

Entry Requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature for a Master degree by research shall normally have either:

qualified with the award of a Bachelor degree with Class 1 or Class 2 (Division 1) Honours from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent;

or

qualified with the award of a Graduate Diploma equivalent to a fourth year of academic study from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent containing a research component with a minimum of a Distinction average overall and a Distinction for the research component;

or

successfully completed a coursework master degree from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent; with a Distinction average overall and a Distinction for the research component;

or

have demonstrated in scholarship or professional performance, potential to undertake research at the Master level. (In such cases the applicant must supply a justification for entry to the Master program and supporting evidence).

Applications with the area of research interest clearly stated can be lodged at any time within the academic year.

Language is part of our everyday lives, yet how much do we actually understand about how it works? Linguistics is the study of language, its structure and meaning, how it is learnt and used, and what this says about who we are and where we come from.

Linguistics broadens your understanding of how language works in your own society, and it also provides understanding of concepts and structures in languages and cultures beyond your own. You will identify core similarities in language and communication, two activities that define us as humans. It appeals especially to students who enjoy learning languages or have a curiosity about language.

CSU's Religious and Values Education program is designed to provide teachers of religious and values education with a grounding in biblical, philosophical, ethical, and multi-faith disciplines within religious studies.

Why study this course?

Religious and Values Education is a recent but growing area of activity in Australian schools. Once confined to independent schools operated by religious organisations, Religious and Values Education is increasingly recognised as an important area of public (government) schools that operate on a secular model. In such contexts the emphasis falls on values education rather than religious education, although many schools would allocate the time already mandated for religious education to this area of activity.

CSU’s Master of Arts (Religious and Values Education) offers graduates with prior Education qualifications an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in religious and values education. The course is designed to offer a mix of learning opportunities such as policy and context, curriculum content, reflective professional practice, and a project tailored to the student’s own context.

The course offers a series of in-depth learning experiences, beginning with a study of recent national and international trends in religious and values education. A set of subjects then focus on recent developments in major curriculum areas within the broad field of religious and values education including teaching the Bible, teaching philosophy of religion, teaching religious ethics, and teaching world religions. Students complete a semester of reflective professional practice before proceeding to advanced studies in either philosophical and ethical enquiry, or in media, popular culture and the arts. The capstone subject for the course is an individual research project in religious and values education.

This research course is offered in the principal research area of the theory of art and design. The program requires students to develop a comprehensive written proposal that outlines their proposed project, places the research within the context of the scholarly literature and outlines the proposed methodology. Students will be examined entirely on the basis of the written paper, unlike the Master of Fine Arts or Master of Design, which focus on visual work. The thesis should be between 30,000 and 40,000 words.

Entry Requirements

Students should hold an Australian bachelors degree with honours (Upper H2B (mark of 65 or above)) or equivalent from a recognised tertiary institution in an area appropriate to their research discipline. In special circumstances, the Faculty may admit an applicant who lacks any of the qualifications listed above, but whose publications and other experience is considered by the Faculty to be equivalent research training in the proposed field of study. Such applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All applications must be accompanied by a research proposal of 200-300 words.
