Show More Anthropology is the study of what it means to be human through the lens of cultural diversity. Sociology examines how human actions in modern societies are shaped by social groups and by wider social, economic and political pressures. Both fields share a common interest in the comparative study of human societies in all their historical and contemporary variations.
This major draws upon the combined strengths of the closely related fields of anthropology and sociology to enhance interdisciplinary research and professional practice. You will focus on local and global contexts, particularly in Australia, South Asia, South-East Asia and East Asia and the Pacific. You will also learn practical and conceptual skills to respond to global and local change. This major allows you to explore contemporary issues including family, sport, gender relations, media, education, work and economic change, community development, health, crime and human rights. The anthropology and sociology major is offered as part of the Bachelor of Arts. You can enhance your studies with a secondary major or choose from a range of elective units to support your career goals. Entry RequirementsApplicants are required to submit a portfolio. Show More This major explores a range of contemporary issues affecting Australian Indigenous peoples' life experiences and aspirations. It provides students with opportunities to engage with both the resilient nature of Australian Indigenous cultures as well as contemporary forms of Indigenous cultural expression, including song, dance, story, art, film and theatre. A range of interdisciplinary conceptual tools is utilised, including critical race theory and emerging Indigenous critical theory, to further the project of decolonising knowledges on and about Indigenous peoples. In so doing, the major also encourages students to examine the issues of personal and national identity, and the relationship between these, themselves and Aboriginality.
