The course is designed to provide students with the skills and techniques necessary for solving problems associated with a broad of range of issues. The extensive range of majors available in established and emerging, generalist and specialist sciences, are all underpinned by cutting edge research. In first year students are encouraged to establish a broad science base which allows for flexibility in choosing an appropriate major or majors. The major completed will appear on the academic record and testamur. A fourth year is required for Honours.

Articulation pathways from NSW TAFE have been approved for the following majors/combined majors: Applied Physics; Biochemistry; Biodiversity/Ecology; Biotechnology/Molecular Genetics; Botany; Chemistry; Crop/Animal Sciences; Genetics; Microbiology; Physiology; Zoology.

Students articulating from an approved NSW TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma will be granted advanced standing - the amount of advanced standing varies depending on the major/combined major being completed.

Entry Requirements

Assumed knowledge is Year 12 HSC Mathematics or equivalent or MATH123 and recommended study is Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics depending on major.

Students are also able to articulate into specified majors on the basis of the completion of a NSW TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma approved by the Faculty.

The School offers Foundation Studies in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics for students who do not have the recommended background knowledge.

From the human genome to the ecosystem, biological sciences are an exciting field of study.

Entry Requirements

All students must have a university entrance qualification, see Massey University undergraduate entry requirements. A background in biology at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) is very useful and other Science subjects (chemistry, and statistics in particular) are helpful. Chemistry is strongly recommended if you want to emphasise molecular aspects of this major.

If you have some chemistry background, but not to NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent), we recommend that you take 123.103 Introductory Chemistry before beginning your programme. This paper will introduce you to basic chemical vocabulary and provides training in the important chemical principles. Similarly, if you have not done NCEA Level 3 Biology you can take 162.103 Introductory Biology. Before enrolling in these papers you will need a university entrance qualification or, if you enrol over the Summer, you must achieve University Entrance before the beginning of Semester One

Biotechnology refers to the use of plants, animals and microorganisms to create new products or processes. Biotechnology plays an important role in helping industry, medicine and agriculture produce foods and medicines, manage disease and pests, and clean up the environment.

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field, encompassing aspects of biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology and instrumental analysis needed to make a contribution in this cut-edge field.

The course includes a combination of core and elective units, and you can tailor the course to your own interests. You might choose to complement your major with electives like environmental science, computing and statistics.

Field trips might take you to eucalyptus plantations in the tropical lowlands or the Malaysian Peninsular and Borneo Islands to visit crop research stations specialising in rice.

In your final year you'll be able to leverage contacts made throughout your course to participate in directed biotechnological research in your applied research project.

By the time you graduate, you will understand the interdisciplinary nature of biotechnology and have skills and knowledge of food and environmental microbiology and natural products chemistry relevant and sought after by local and international industries.

This interdisciplinary laboratory-based program has a core of basic science studies including principles of modern instrumentation, experimental design and data analysis, biochemical and microbiological techniques and recombinant DNA technology.

The industrial strand offered at Gippsland incorporates food microbiology, environmental microbiology and chemistry, providing opportunities for local employment in the dairy and water and waste industries; links with regional industries enable final-year students to participate in directed biotechnological research in an applied research project.

Units 3 and 4 - one of biology, chemistry, mathematical methods (CAS), physics, geography, psychology or specialist mathematics; and

A study score of at least 20 in any VCE English units 3 and 4.

Students studying any laboratory based units by distance education are required to attend compulsory residential schools at the Gippsland campus in order to complete the practical component. The residential program may involve between 5 and 7 days per unit of study and are usually held in April and September.
