Online Interdisciplinary Studies Degree :: Accredited Universities

The Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree from King University allows students the opportunity to pursue a personalized plan of study with coursework not available in a traditional major. Students in the program develop knowledge and skills of special interest, combining courses that are currently available across different disciplines to create an individualized course plan.
Students in the Interdisciplinary Studies program create an educational plan that best suits their needs, interests and career objectives. Those interested in this major should contact the Program Coordinator, Student Support Specialist or their academic advisors to develop a plan of study. This will be used to determine degree requirement compliance and course sequence.

Entry Requirements

Students applying for entry into King University bachelor’s programs must meet the following requirements:
• A minimum of a 2.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and the equivalent of 60 semester hours or an associate degree.
• Students with less than a 2.2 GPA may be considered and accepted on a conditional basis provided they are able to demonstrate a significant rationale as to why they feel they will succeed in the program.
• A completed “Plan of Study” to document how those students who need extra courses to meet the required 124 credits for graduation will earn additional credits. Students with 45 to 60 hours may apply for admission; however, they must meet with a King University Student Support Specialist to develop a specific written plan that outlines how they will complete the program. This plan must be in place prior to registration of classes.

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) degree frees you to design a major around your multiple interests and prepares you for careers and graduate programs that cross disciplinary boundaries.

Interdisciplinary students develop the intellectual tools needed to build bridges across academic disciplines and apply their skills, innovations and knowledge in various academic and practical settings.

Because of the flexibility of the BIS degree, graduates leave ASU ready for their next steps in life, whether employment in an entry-level position, promotional opportunities, or graduate studies in a variety of disciplines.

The BIS degree is available to all students in good academic standing with sophomore standing (25 credits or more). Students must complete the online BIS Pre-Advising Workshop at sls.asu.edu/bis/.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must successfully complete ASU competency requirements. Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 in any subject area. Most competencies may also be met by test scores or college courses.

English - 4 years (composition/literature based)
Math - 4 years - Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and one course requiring Algebra II as a prerequisite.
Laboratory Science - 3 years total (1 year each from any of the following areas are accepted: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Integrated Sciences, and Physics)
Social Science - 2 years (including one year American History)
Foreign Language - 2 years (same language)
Fine Arts - 1 year

Applicants must also meet at least one of the following:

Top 25% in high school graduating class
3.0 GPA in competency courses (4.0 = A)
ACT 22 (24 nonresidents)*
SAT Reasoning 1040 (1110 nonresidents)*

*ASU does not require the writing portion of these tests.

Individual Review

All students who don’t meet the above standards will be evaluated through a process called Individual Review. Through this process Undergraduate Admissions will review all available information about a student’s application, carefully considering all aspects of a student’s academic background and accomplishments. Submission of an ACT or SAT test score is highly recommended. In some cases, additional information might be requested.

The Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies Social Sciences is for students who are interested in broader options in course selection than are possible within a traditional departmental major and who want to specialize their course of study according to individual interests and professional/educational aspirations. Persons holding this degree will find employment in a variety of occupations, ranging from corporate to social services, depending upon their primary emphasis among the various disciplines within the social science category. This degree also provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in psychology, sociology, social work, and political science.

Entry Requirements

Applicants with a 3.4 cumulative GPA or higher and have satisfied the CADR requirements (see below) will be automatically admitted regardless of ACT or SAT score*. Admission Essay is not required.

*Applicants must still submit an ACT or SAT test scores. Test scores are used for scholarship consideration and for placement into English and Math courses at CWU.

Applicants with a 3.00 - 3.39 cumulative GPA who have satisfied the CADR requirements will be considered for admission based on grades AND test scores.

For applicants with CADR deficiencies, Admissions will take into account, grade trends, course rigor, senior year course schedule, and ACT/SAT scores. Admissions Essay recommended ( essay questions ).

Applicants with a cumulative GPA of 2.00 - 2.99 and/or CADR deficiencies will be considered through CWU's holistic Comprehensive Review Process. In this process we consider your responses to essay questions , grade trends, course rigor, senior year course schedule, and ACT/SAT scores. Admissions Essay is required.

To be considered for admissions, students must have at least a 2.00 cumulative GPA in high school and any applicable college work.

COLLEGE ACADEMIC DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS (CADR)

CADR refers to college admission criteria established by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC). Each school district determines which of its courses meet CADR guidelines. Students are encouraged to take additional courses above and beyond the minimum CADR requirements listed below.

English: 4 credits (including 3 credits of literature and composition)

Math: 3 credits (including algebra I, algebra II and geometry)

Senior year Math-Based Quantitative Course: 1 credit. (Acceptable courses include algebra I, algebra II, geometry, pre-calculus and above, math analysis, statistics, applied math, appropriate career and technical courses, or an algebra-based science course such as chemistry or physics. If you take and pass pre-calculus, math analysis or calculus prior to your senior year, you're exempt from this requirement.)

Social Science: 3 credits

Lab Science: 2 credits (one credit required in an algebra based lab science)

World Language: 2 credits of the same world language, Native American language or American Sign Language
1 credit of fine, visual, or performing arts, or electives from any of the other required CADR areas

International Students

To submit proof of English proficiency, international students (except those from Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and English-speaking provinces of Canada) must submit one of the following:

a) IELTS score (6.0) or TOEFL score (525 for paper-based, 195 for computer-based, 71 for Internet-based)

b) A 3.0 or B grade in each of the two college-level English composition classes from a U.S. college or university.

c) Recommendation from CWU’s UESL program.

The Bachelor of science in Interdisciplinary Studies (B.S.I.S.) provides students with a well-rounded, liberal studies education. It allows students to complete two areas of concentration, where students may choose either a minor or 12 hours of related coursework appropriate to their educational or professional goals. The program provides the opportunity for students to integrate personal and professional growth through an exploration of perspectives, philosophies, and experiences in a variety of disciplines.
