Online Building Services Engineering With Sustainable Energy Degree :: Accredited Universities

In recent years it has become increasingly recognised that the design and operation of buildings need to take greater account of energy consumption. This is reflected in the Building Regulations in the UK and other countries in Europe with the implementation of the EU Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings since 2006. This course combines building services engineering knowledge with the addition of specific energy consideration in their design.

Building Services Design for Energy Efficient Buildings.

3-to-5-Years Distance-Learning
The distance learning programme is designed to enable candidate to conduct most of candidate's studies at home, in candidate's own time and at candidate's own pace. There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University and there is no set timetable of lectures, instead candidate follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. This gives candidate the freedom to arrange a work programme to suit themrselves and candidate should usually allow about twelve hours each week for study. There are set submission dates for assignments but we have tried to design the programme so that they are well spaced, giving candidate the maximum flexibility in candidate's study plans.

Students can take between 3 and 5 years to complete the course. The average is 3 years, with students taking four modules in the first year, three modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on candidate's other commitments candidate can take longer up to a maximum of 5 years. Students are supplied with a study pack in the form of text books and CD-ROMs; candidate have assignments to submit and exams to sit each year. Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University or in the country candidate are resident in. We have an extensive network of organisations (Universities, Colleges and British Council Offices) throughout the world who will provide invigilation services. The cost of invigilation away from Brunel is candidate's responsibility. Examinations are held in May each year

Entry Requirements

A UK first or second class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in an engineering; appropriate science or technology discipline. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.

Try living in one without any heating, cooling, electrical power, lighting, water or drainage. What would it be like to work in a tower without lifts? How would you manage without telephones, an IT system or an internet connection? All of these systems and many more are designed by building services engineers. Building Service Engineers turn buildings from empty shells into spaces fit for people to use.

From the very start of the building design, Building Services Engineers are involved helping architects and other members of the design team to get the size, shape and configuration of the building right. They determine strategies for designing energy efficient buildings, making them sustainable in the long term. Buildings are responsible for a large chunk of carbon emissions so this work makes a critical contribution to reducing a building's impact on climate change.

Of all the disciplines working in the built environment today, the building services engineer has the broadest reach and the deepest impact, affecting virtually every aspect of building design. In short, they make buildings work.

This Masters course provides a broad basis of advanced understanding in the technological areas of building services and energy engineering, with particular emphasis on those areas that are relevant to the interaction between the built and natural environments, modern industry, and the analysis of developing technologies

Entry Requirements

The course is designed for students with undergraduate degrees in mechanical, electrical or chemical engineering, or other relevant engineering disciplines, and seek to develop specialised skills in building services engineering to enter this industry.

A BEng (Hons) degree in an appropriate discipline. Normally upper second class would be considered a minimum, but lower class may be acceptable depending on experience.
Cognate degrees in appropriate disciplines (e.g. physics, chemistry or mathematics) will be accepted provided the candidate demonstrates some knowledge of building services engineering.
Other qualifications may be accepted depending on age and experience. This category would normally be reserved for mature candidates who have had several years experience in the building services industry.
For applicants whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent is required.
