Modes of Study
3-5 Years Distance Learning The distance learning programme is designed to enable candidate to conduct most of candidate's studies at home, in candidate's own time and at candidate's own pace. There is no requirement to attend lectures at Brunel University and there is no set timetable of lectures, instead candidate follow a structured programme of self-study at home or at work. This gives candidate the freedom to arrange a work programme to suit themselves and candidate should usually allow about twelve hours each week for study. There are set submission dates for assignments but we have tried to design the programme so that they are well-spaced, giving candidate the maximum flexibility in candidate's study plans.

Students can take between 3 and 5 years to complete the course. The average is 3 years, with students taking four modules in the first year, four modules in the second year and the dissertation in the third year. However, depending on candidate's other commitments candidate can take longer up to a maximum of 5 years. Students are supplied with a study pack in the form of text books and CD-ROMs; candidate have assignments to submit and exams to sit each year. Examinations can be taken either at Brunel University or in the country candidate are resident in. We have an extensive network of organisations (Universities, Colleges and British Council Offices) throughout the world who will provide invigilation services. The cost of invigilation away from Brunel is candidate's responsibility. Examinations are held in May each year.

Entry Requirements

A UK first or second class Honours degree or equivalent internationally recognised qualification in an engineering; appropriate science or technology discipline. Other qualifications and relevant experience will be assessed on an individual basis.

Brunel also offers our own BrunELT English Test and accept a range of other language courses. We also have a range of Pre-sessional English language courses, for students who do not meet these requirements, or who wish to improve their English.

Our International Pathways and Language Centre offers a range of foundation and pre-masters courses to provide candidate with the academic skills required for candidate's chosen course.

WEDC, part of the School of Civil and Building Engineering, is one of the world’s leading education and research centres for developing knowledge and capacity in water and sanitation for low- and middle-income countries.

This programme is aimed at engineers who wish to specialise in water and wastewater engineering from an international perspective. It develops participants’ understanding of important aspects of sustainable public health infrastructure and services for all levels of consumers, equipping them with appropriate expertise and skills for work in low- and middle-income countries. It also provides opportunities for specialisation in one topic through in-depth study during the Research Dissertation module.

This programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM).

Entry Requirements

Entry qualifications vary depending on the programme, but generally a good degree from a UK university or equivalent professional qualification from an overseas institution recognised by Loughborough University is required.

In some cases those with lower qualifications can gain access when studying by distance-learning.

The main English language qualifications acceptable for entry to our programmes are:

GCSE English Language – Grade C or above

IELTS band 6.5 or above with not less than 6.0 in each sub test

TOEFL, including the Tests in Written and Spoken Practice, minimum: score of 600 (paper-based test) or 100 (Internet-based test) with specific requirements for sub test

This programme is for graduates with little or no practical experience of emergency infrastructure provision, as well as experienced practitioners who have a specific interest in addressing the problems of emergency infrastructure in low- and middle-income countries.

It develops participants’ potential and understanding of the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergency situations, equipping them with the appropriate expertise and skills.

On completion of the programme participants will be able to:

understand the types of disasters, their trends, causes and consequences

assess, plan, manage and implement infrastructure provision in emergencies

appreciate the range of infrastructure needed by communities affected by emergencies, both during and after the event

describe, design, use, operate and maintain the range of technologies generally used in emergency water supply and sanitation

work with traumatised populations to deliver essential services
