Our Advanced Practice programme comprises 15 separate specialist awards tailored to the needs of national and international students in nursing, midwifery and the allied health professions.

Online delivery
Our Advanced Practice pathways are taught via online delivery. Depending on the pathway you choose, there may also be some face-to-face teaching (local students only) and work-based learning to bridge the theory-practice gap. This flexible format means that you will be able to study whilst remaining employed in your chosen profession.
Students will be supported by highly experienced academic educators with significant experience across a range of professional backgrounds.

Applicants are normally required to have a relevant first degree. Previous experience may also be considered upon application, for more information, visit the School of Nursing & Midwifery APEL webpage.

As this course is delivered online, access to a personal computer with a good connection to the internet is necessary (broadband recommended).

In addition, you may also need to gain support from your employing organization, including agreement to release you from your workplace for sufficient time to achieve these learning outcomes and competencies.

English Language Requirement:

IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component less than 6.0 (or equivalent), if your first language is not English. Please check our Language Requirements page for details of equivalent grades from other test providers, and information about the University of Dundee English Language courses.

Please note that a yearly fee of £200 (subject to annual review) will be payable if the dissertation is not completed within a period of 12 months.

This course will enable you to do just that. Critical appraisal of relevant health and social policy throughout the course will help you to apply new knowledge and skills to achieve advanced levels of practice, expanding your career progression opportunities. You'll also acquire the knowledge and skills you need to influence decision making at both local and strategic levels.

You'll develop a combination of theoretical and practical skills in this course, including critical thinking when considering the issues associated with practice, knowledge and application of research methods and their application, and efficient approaches to time management, prioritisation and workload planning. You will also learn to recognise and manage the personal stresses of the profession, and become proficient in the use of the latest technologies in the practice of your role.

The entry requirement for this course is a UK degree. We look for applicants to have a background in Professionals caring for the public in order to be eligible for the programme.
We may also consider lesser qualifications if candidates have sufficient relevant work experience within the industry.
If English is not your first language, it is usually required that you sit an English language test in order to gain entry onto our postgraduate programmes. This course requires the standard IELTS 6.0 with no individual component score of less than 5.5 or equivalent.

Working with clinical experts, specialist agencies, research centres and keynote experts ensures the course has a robust and credible practice base in both its delivery and application. This initiative addresses the changing frame of health, social, public and voluntary sector workers – whereby collaboration and shared working is recognised as meeting the needs of the individual worker, patients, public and carers.

The Advanced Practice courses are specifically designed for practitioners in health and social care and allied health professions who engage with a broad range of individuals with differing health and social care needs. The course is designed to both develop and embed knowledge, skill and confidence in practitioners who may already be working in a senior position as well as providing a base for those who are aspiring to advance their career. Each of the themed courses equips you with the ability to challenge theory, practice and effectiveness within the core elements of the course as well as in your chosen specialist fields.

We develop your ability to critically examine theoretical frameworks which can be integrated within your advanced practice. Autonomous and multi-professional working allows students from differing professions to work innovatively and learn collaboratively, in keeping with the ethos of cross-sector partnerships in health and social service provision.

Entry Requirements

A minimum of a second class Honours degree (2.1 preferred) or equivalent in a relevant subject. Applicants without these formal qualifications but with significant appropriate/relevant work/life experience are encouraged to apply.

Current professional registration as nurse or health/social care practioner is required.

If English is not your first language, you must provide evidence of your proficiency such as a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (6.0 in all bands).

If you don’t meet the required score you may be able to register for one of our pre-sessional English courses. To register you must hold a conditional offer for your course and have an IELTS score 0.5 or 1.0 below the required standard.

ODU's Doctor of Nursing Practice program is a fully accredited (CCNE) post-MSN program developed to advance the roles and practice skills of advanced practice nurses including nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists and nurse anesthetists.

1. Completed a MS or MSN degree

2. Advanced practice education and licensure as a NP, CNS, CNM or CRNA

3. Graduate degree with quality point averages of 3.2 overall

4. Requires TOEFL score for non-native English speakers (ODU requires a score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, and a 79-80 on the iBT)

Similar to our MSc Advanced Practice and Applied Education course, this route allows you to apply advanced practice and applied education to the specialisation of midwifery.

This part-time course allows you to extend your career in midwifery, with the emphasis on teaching and learning methods. Rather than producing technicians, it aims to enhance the quality of maternity care by fostering a broader, deeper and more critical approach to midwifery and education. The course will prepare you for a deeper involvement in the development and communication of the theories behind your practice.

The applied education element of this course allows you to register on the 'teacher' division of the NMC. The course is also recognised by SEDA (the Staff and Educational Development Association), and accredited by the HEA (Higher Education Academy).

This course's aim is to encourage independent and autonomous learning, along with confident teaching and communication techniques. You'll build on your existing knowledge and skills to a point where you will be confident in your ability to participate more actively in your chosen field, particularly in the area of policy development and communication.
