The Master of Advanced Health Practice has been developed for individuals with a background in a health science discipline including nursing and allied health professions. The course is focused on professional development for current health practitioners, giving them a broad overview of the latest developments in various fields.

The course is practical and allows students to build on their existing experience. It enables students to pursue their interests through the choice of specialisations across a range of advanced health practice areas. Alternatively, the degree can be completed as a generic course of study without a specialisation by undertaking a selection of units in accordance with the award rules. This programme is open to all healthcare professionals with an interest in health in the paediatric population, epidemiology including risk factors, and public health issues including nutrition and physical activity.

Professional clinical practice, evidence-based practice, research methods, musculoskeletal health in the infant, musculoskeletal health in the pre-school child, musculoskeletal health in the school-aged child and musculoskeletal health in the adolescent.

The MSc Advanced Professional Practice (APP) degree, validated by Bournemouth University, has been developed by the AECC to support professional development. The programme provides a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to attain the generic skills and attitudes of continuing professional development, experiential learning and reflective practice, and to develop advanced clinical and practical skills in specialised areas of practice. The MSc APP is a part-time, ‘at a distance’, programme enabling healthcare professionals to combine professional learning in the workplace with a postgraduate academic qualification.

Entry Requirements

The Paediatric Musculoskeletal Health course is intended for healthcare professionals in professional practice, including clinicians, teachers and researchers. Applicants must have a recognised professional qualification in line with the admissions regulations. Credit for prior learning is possible on approval by the Pathway Leader. Students who have successfully completed the PgCert Professional Development (Chiropractic) will be exempted from part of the programme (as specified in the individual pathways). Admission is at the discretion of the Pathway Leader.
Applicants for whom English is not their first language, must offer evidence of qualifications in written and spoken English. Acceptable qualifications are IELTS (academic) 6.0 and TOEFL 80 (internet based) or 550 (paper based), or direct equivalents.

As part of a suite of courses covering Maternal and Child Health at University of the West of Scotland, study on the MSc, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate certificate in Maternal & Child Health in Advanced Neonatal/ Paediatric Practice will focus on advanced neonatal practice or advanced paediatric practice.

Advanced practice is about a level of practice, rather than a specific role or title, but is applicable across both practice and professional contexts. This course aims to develop highly knowledgeable and skilled postgraduate neonatal/paediatric practitioners who wish to further progress their knowledge, skills and competence relevant to advanced neonatal or paediatric practice.

A key feature is the multi-professional nature of shared learning to advanced practice education. Shared learning is advocated as a way of breaking down professional boundaries and aids in developing a more cohesive approach to practice. Therefore, some of the modules are shared between neonatal and paediatric students, with subject specific learning taking place together; students will then be expected to contextualise this learning and apply it to their own specific practice settings.

All applicants: must either be registered nurses on parts 1, 2 or 3 of the NMC professional register; equivalent regulating body in other countries or registered allied health professionals (e.g. Physiotherapy,
Speech and Language Therapy).

All applicants should normally possess a degree or equivalent; have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in
a neonatal/paediatric specialty.

The Adult-Gerontological Health Nurse Practitioner Program prepares nurses as expert providers of primary health care to young adults, adults, older adults and their families across health care settings. The primary focus of the program is to prepare the graduate to promote, maintain, supervise, and restore health, identify health risks, and assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic illnesses common in primary care. The ability to function as an educator, leader, consultant, advocate, and change agent is an essential to the development of clinical expertise in this role.

Clinical Practice Portfolio - Applicants to a master's program with a non-nursing bachelor's degree are required to submit a clinical practice portfolio to be evaluated for baccalaureate-level nursing competencies once they have been admitted to a program. The Clinical Practice Portfolio fee is $300. If the portfolio does not meet academic standards, the student cannot be matriculated.
