Wishing to forge an exceptional accounting career? CSU’s industry recognised Master of Accounting Practice offers a highly specialised program for students wishing to gain a competitive edge in their career through acquisition of advanced skills and knowledge in the discipline.

Designed for students who have completed a bachelor degree with an accounting major or a postgraduate conversion program in accounting, the Master of Accounting Practice at CSU builds on previous studies in accounting and related fields by extending theoretical and technical knowledge in specialised subject areas relevant to professional practice in accounting.

The course offers domestic and international accounting graduates a pathway for completing a recognised postgraduate qualification while concurrently receiving comprehensive tuition and support in preparation for the CPA Program® professional level examinations.

CSU’s Master of Accounting Practice also offers the option of professional workplace practice, enabling students to gain valuable experience in the workplace whilst applying their theoretical knowledge to solve practical workplace problems.

Available for study on campus at CSU Study Centres Sydney and Melbourne. CSU’s Master of Accounting Practice is also available online. Subjects are taught using a range of blended learning techniques which include online study materials, video-captured lectures, online meetings, subject forums and additional study resources.

Full- time and part- time study options are available to fit in with work and lifestyle commitments. Students can choose to study just one subject a session, or fast-track completion by studying up to four subjects a session.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a bachelor degree with a major in accounting, or a postgraduate foundation degree in accounting, from a recognised Australian tertiary institution, or a qualification deemed to be equivalent.

Applicants must also have eligibility for enrolment in the CPA Program professional level as assessed by CPA Australia.

Applicants must have sufficient English proficiency to meet the general requirements of the University, or must demonstrate proficiency explicitly as follows: Students must have attained within two years of commencement of the course an Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) overall score of at least 6.5 with no score below 6 in any band.

Applicants wishing to transfer into the program from a current enrolment in another course must have a Credit average on studies completed prior to transfer.

Graduates of degree courses other than accounting may later wish to enhance their management skills or become professional accountants by undertaking a conversion course such as this MACPP. A conversion course enables graduates with non-accounting or partial accounting backgrounds to meet the academic requirements for membership of CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants of the UK. The course focuses on contemporary knowledge and skills required for practise as a public or chartered accountant; effective management; accountability and control; and effective decision-making for financial success.

Studies in the Master of Accounting (Professional Practice) will provide the technical and conceptual skills required to become a competent accountant, and will develop students' abilities to analyse, criticise and synthesise various accounting and related principles, methods and techniques. The skills and knowledge gained from this course will prepare students to be effective managers or financial analysts. Graduates find employment as accountants or financial analysts, and may increase promotional opportunities in their existing occupations.

The course also provides the opportunity for professional practice experience and/or research and training in business communications.

Professional Practice placements are limited and may not be available in every state and territory. Students are responsible for making their own travel and accommodation arrangements and meeting all associated costs.
Students wishing to undertake Professional Practice units should first undertake a preliminary interview with the Head of School. Please be aware the Professional Practice units will not be introduced at CDU Sydney until 2015.

Applicants who have fully satisfied the entry requirements of the accounting professional bodies in their first degree are not eligible for entry. Applicants who may have partially satisfied the entry requirements of the accounting professional bodies in their first degree are required to have their qualifications assessed by CPA Australia or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia to ensure that they will exit with the academic qualification required for accreditation by the Australian Professional Accounting Bodies.

This degree program is designed to provide students with the business and management skills necessary to become effective leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs in today’s competitive economy. The degree offers both a practical management education and enough breadth in complementary academic subjects to prepare students to function effectively in complex private organizations or the public sector.
This concentration prepares students to become an integral part of an organization’s management team or to enter public practice. Governments, nonprofits, major corporations and small businesses all require accountants to manage their financial affairs. Upon graduation, most students choose to pursue one of the three professional accounting designations: Chartered Accountants (CA), Certified General Accountants (CGA) or Certified Management Accountants (CMA). By careful selection of electives within this concentration, students can receive most or all of the possible exemptions within these professional level programs and be well prepared to write the rigorous accreditation examinations.

• Applicants to specific programs are required to fulfill program admission requirements.
• Upon reading suggested or required course requisites, applicants registering in Open Learning courses must determine if their level of education or experience is suitable to meet course prerequisites and be prepared to support this declaration, if required. Once registered, students are affirming they either meet course prerequisites or are taking responsibility for their enrolment in courses, as applicable. In doing so, students are acknowledging personal responsibility for their educational proficiency and performance in the courses they have enrolled in. Open Learning students wishing to take courses on campus may have to prove that they meet certain prerequisites.
• Applicants must have proficiency in English at a level suitable to the course or program of study for which they are applying. University-level courses require English proficiency equivalent to Grade 12 English or higher. While most courses and programs offered through TRU-OL do not require any particular English proficiency tests, prospective students who have English as a second language may be asked to provide information concerning their proficiency in English.
• Normally, formal admission requires completion of a minimum of 60 applicable credits or a suitable two-year business diploma program. Applicants who do not meet this requirement but possess other post-secondary credits and/or significant experiential learning may also apply and may receive credit for courses taken and/or through Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Those assessed as lacking some requirements may be admitted to the degree program provisionally (pending completion of qualifying coursework).

Notes

• All persons are eligible for general admission to Open Learning and can apply for course registration as well as admission into credential programs. Differential fees and services may apply to applicants who are classified as international students as well as non-permanent residents of British Columbia.
• Applicants do not require a specific grade point average (GPA) and are not required to submit transcripts from secondary school to be admitted to TRU-OL and to register in courses.
• International students required to write their exams outside of Canada must submit a Statement of Presiding Supervisor form. Students are required to locate their own exam supervisor and once the student and supervisor have completed their portion of the form, it should be faxed or mailed to Open Learning.

• Those with a recognized two-year college business diploma receive a block transfer of up to 60 credits toward the degree. Other recognized diplomas are also eligible but may receive a reduced block transfer.
• Those with selected BC Institute of Technology (BCIT) business diplomas receive a block transfer of up to 72 credits toward the degree.
• Those with the Certified General Accountants' Association (CGA) foundation, advanced, and PACE levels receive block PLAR of up to 90 credits toward the degree, based on compulsory courses taken in their accounting programs and the association's mandatory practical experience requirements.
• Those who have completed the Certified Management Accountants (CMA) program may apply and are normally awarded a block of 90 PLAR credits for successful completion of the CMA's syllabus, entrance examination, Strategic Leadership program and experience requirements.
• Those in the process of completing the CMA or CGA program are eligible for provisional admission and may take TRU-OL courses concurrent to their CMA or CGA program.
• If a computer course was taken more than seven years prior to admission to this program and the student wishes to apply this course towards a specific computer course requirement, then the student must demonstrate currency in that topic to the satisfaction of TRU-OL, in order to be granted the desired transfer credit. This restriction does not apply to computer courses used for unspecified elective credit.
