This combined degree programme will appeal to those who are interested in majoring in Theology and would also like to learn more about a different discipline. You can choose to study English, Philosophy or Computing as minor options. The degree will be 75 per cent Theology courses, and 25 per cent courses from your minor option.

Why theology?

Religious beliefs provide a sense of purpose, a source of values and a way of life for many people. Studying Theology will give you a greater understanding of religious beliefs and the way in which they have shaped societies, and will give you an opportunity to evaluate your own beliefs about the nature and purpose of human existence, whether you are an active member of a faith community, agnostic, or have no faith at all.

Programme Combinations

Theology with English: The English components of this programme will enable you to broaden your study of the human condition by focusing on some of the greatest works of literature from the Middle Ages to the present day. An understanding of theological ideas will provide insights into the many works of literature which are informed or inspired by Christianity and other religions. You will gain a critical understanding of key texts, events, doctrines, theories, interpretations and arguments relating to the study of Theology and English. At the same time you will develop your skills in critical thinking, research, problem analysis and self-organisation.

Theology with Philosophy: Studying a Philosophy minor will broaden the intellectual scope of your theological studies. Philosophy is an important tool in helping to understand what religion is, and whether belief is reasonable. Philosophy courses will help you to understand the impact of religion on individuals and society from a philosophical standpoint. The debate about whether there is a God is at least in part about philosophical arguments for the existence of God.

Theology with Computing: There are three subject-specific pathways within the Computing minor programme, which are reflected in your qualification.

Theology with Computing (Computer Science): Studying Computer Science will help to enhance your employability as computing skills are valued in many jobs. The computing courses cover topics such as algorithms and data compression, which will appeal to those with an interest in mathematics and computation.
Theology with Computing (Computing and Cognition): This pathway emphasises the cognitive aspects of computing. Cognitive science is a subject area that takes human cognition as its starting point, and looks at how knowledge in this area can be applied to computing, and vice versa. Creativity and artificial intelligence are part of this broad area of study, and the courses offered on this pathway come from creative computing and artificial intelligence.
Theology with Computing (Computing Information Systems): Computing Information Systems offers subjects that are broadly related to electronic commerce and information technology. Having a practical knowledge of information systems, as well as the analytical skills developed through Theology, will give you a wider range of transferable, employment-related skills.

Entry Requirements

BA and Diploma of Higher Education

To be eligible for the BA or Diploma of Higher Education you must normally* be aged 17 or above by the 30 November in the year of registration and satisfy the University’s General Entrance Requirements.

If you choose English as a minor you need to also:

demonstrate competence in English at least equivalent to UK GCE A level at grade E or above and
satisfy the University’s general English language proficiency requirements as outlined below
If you choose the Computing Information Systems minor pathway you need to also:

demonstrate competence at least equivalent to UK GCSE/GCE O level grade C in an acceptable mathematical related subject.

Certificate of Higher Education

To be eligible for the Certificate of Higher Education with Theology as the major you must:

normally* be aged 18 or above by the 1 September at the time of registration
have passed the equivalent of at least three separate subjects at UK GCSE/GCE O level (at not less than grade C).
If you choose the Computing Information Systems minor pathway you need to also:

demonstrate competence at least equivalent to UK GCSE/GCE O level grade C in an acceptable mathematical related subject.
If you choose the Computer Science or Computing and Cognition minor pathways, you need to also:

demonstrate competence at least equivalent to UK GCSE/GCE O level grade B or an acceptable mathematical related subject.

* Applications will be considered from applicants who do not meet the normal minimum age requirement for admission. Each application will be considered on an individual basis, and the decision taken at the discretion of the University of London.

Christian & Religious Studies is a part-time distance programme of courses designed for those who are training for roles in the Church and those who have a general interest in religious questions.

Credits for year three are made up of 90 credit points from DR/RS/KL courses of choice at level three or above and must include the Special Paper, plus 30 credit points of choice, as agreed upon by the adviser of studies.

Credits for year four are made up of 90 credit points from DR/RS/KL courses of choice at level four, and must include the Dissertation, plus 30 credit points of choice, as agreed upon by the adviser of studies.

Entry Requirements

As part of its commitment to widening access to higher education, the University of Aberdeen offers a bridge to degree level study through a part-time Access to Degree Studies Programme. Applications are welcome from both school leavers and mature students.

As well as being aimed at those with few or no qualifications who wish to gain entry to undergraduate study. it is also a route back into learning for those who require to top up qualifications or are planning to make a career change.

Philosophy with English: Philosophical themes and questions can be found in almost any work of literature; indeed many early literary works were actually works of philosophy. This combined degree will help you to better understand the relationship between literature and philosophy. You may like to consider why authors used literature as the vehicle to explore philosophical questions; for example, why did the Romantic poets explored Longinus’s concept of the sublime through poetry, and how did American literature derive its ‘Transcendental’ school from Kantian philosophy? Studying English will also enhance your ability to understand and analyse a variety of texts.

Philosophy with Theology: Philosophy and Theology are generally considered to be related disciplines, and studying them together will enable you to gain a new perspective and greater understanding of each subject area. This will be particularly useful to those with an interest in philosophy of religion - the philosophical scrutiny of claims of religious believers and those made on behalf of religious traditions, particularly those related to Christianity. You will be able to explore questions such as the nature and existence of God, whether religious belief is reasonable, the impact of religion on individuals and society, and the compatibility of divine omniscience and human freedom.

CSU’s Bachelor of Theology enriches students spiritually and vocationally equipping them for leadership and ministry in the life and work of the Christian church. This course is theologically and biblically rich, vocationally oriented, ecumenically sensitive and integrated with practical experience.

Why study this course?

CSU’s Bachelor of Theology encourages and fosters the search for meaning and spiritual depth in the context of cultural and religious pluralism in contemporary Australia. Students are offered a thorough grounding in the four foundational areas of theology: Biblical Studies, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Church History. Each program has a strong basis in Biblical Studies and Systematic Theology. There is a focused emphasis on theory and practice together in the area of Practical Theology, however students have opportunities to pursue a significant number of subjects in any of the four main areas.

First year students are introduced to the four sub-disciplines and include introductory subjects in the Old and New Testaments. Students will study two subjects in Church History; one on the early church and the other on the Reformation. This is complemented by two subjects from Practical Theology; one on worship and the other an introduction to practical theology itself. The course is rounded off with two subjects in Systematic Theology providing an introduction to theology and a subject on the theology of the church. The intention here is that you are opened to the range of possibilities in theology and also invited to explore how you can integrate these four areas.

Across the program you will have the opportunity to develop frameworks for critical and constructive engagement in church and society. Support is available for you to learn how to study, take notes, write essays, use the library and become confident as a student.
