The Sports and Health Sciences degree is a scientific study of human movement and human behavior relative to exercise, fitness, nutrition, health, and wellness. This degree is designed to prepare students to meet challenges in these dynamic and emerging fields of study. Students will engage in core issues and concepts in areas such as anatomy and physiology, nutrition, kinesiology, and exercise programming and testing. An emphasis is placed on biophysical functions, evidence based practice and principles applicable to human movement and performance in physical activity.

The bachelor’s degree program is open to students who possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.

All students who enroll in the bachelor's degree program must enroll in COLL100 - Foundations of Online Learning as their first course.

CSU's Master of Health Science (Honours) offers students the opportunity to develop knowledge, skill and attitudes necessary for conduct of individual research.

Subject to regulation and approval, Master of Health Science (Honours) candidates may conduct their research at other places where adequate facilities and associate supervisors are available. The direction of the work remains under the control of the University.

The course's key objectives are to develop:

a specialised body of knowledge appropriate to a research career

skills of information gathering, processing and evaluation, problem solving and communication.

Students complete a period of study and research, and prepare a thesis.

Entry Requirements

An applicant to the Master of Health Science (Honours) must hold:

an undergraduate degree with Honours in the health sciences or a related field

or

a Master coursework degree in the health sciences or a related field (with an academic record at an average level of Credit or above)

or

qualifications considered by the Faculty to be equivalent to those specified above*

and

have completed appropriate research methods subjects

and

have been engaged in appropriate professional experience in the health sciences or a related field for the equivalent of at least two full-time years.

In the context of (*) above, students who do not possess a Bachelor degree at Honours level may be admitted to candidature if they have:

an appropriate first degree and a relevant Postgraduate Diploma (both with an academic record at an average level of Credit or above)

or

an appropriate first degree (with an academic record at an average level of Credit or above) and successfully complete the following Master level subjects: Research Methods in Health Science A or Research Methods in Health Science B.

The MSc Advanced Professional Practice (APP) degree, validated by Bournemouth
University, has been developed by the AECC to support professional development. The
programme provides a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals to attain the generic
skills and attitudes of continuing professional development, experiential learning and
reflective practice, and to develop advanced clinical and practical skills in specialised areas
of practice. The MSc APP is a part-time, ‘at a distance’, programme enabling healthcare
professionals to combine professional learning in the workplace with a postgraduate
academic qualification. To reflect the areas of specialised practice, five pathways are
available:

Entry Requirements

The Orthopaedics course is intended for practitioners in professional practice including those with an undergraduate qualification in medicine, chiropractic, physiotherapy, osteopathy, exercise science, sport science or other related degrees. Other undergraduate degrees will be considered depending on the level of human biological sciences completed in the degree programme. Applicants must have a recognised first qualification in line with the admissions regulations. Credit for prior learning is possible on approval by the Pathway Leader. Admission is at the discretion of the Pathway Leader.

Applicants for whom English is not their first language, must offer evidence of qualifications in written and spoken English. Acceptable qualifications are IELTS (academic) 6.0 and TOEFL 80 (internet based) or 550 (paper based), or direct equivalents.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Exercise Science program consists of 41 credit hours and is offered fully online. The B.A. in Exercise Science is designed for busy adult students who are interested in obtaining their degree and require the flexibility of attending class on their schedule.

The online exercise science degree focuses on kinesiology concepts in human movement, exercise and management. The Exercise Science degree prepares students for positions in coaching, fitness and wellness centers, health and wellness education, personal training and rehabilitation sciences.

The online exercise science degree also prepares students for postbaccalaureate study in areas such as aging, athletic training, biomechanics, chiropractics, exercise physiology, human growth, sports management, sport psychology and more.

The Bachelor of Paramedic Science (Specialisation) CQUniversity provides opportunities for those students who wish to become paramedics as well as for practicing paramedics who wish to complete a bachelor degree.

The Clinical specialisation is your first step towards a rewarding career in paramedic science. The program is designed to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge to practice and deliver emergency pre-hospital medical and trauma care. The first year of the program provides foundation knowledge in sciences, human body systems, study and research skills, and paramedic practice. Years two and three of the program focus on disease processes and their emergency treatment with practical placements in paramedic care. During work placements, students have the opportunity to work closely with paramedics and respond to real-life emergency situations. As a student you are exposed to the most up-to-date high fidelity simulation equipment to support your work integrated learning. CQUniversity’s program includes 15 weeks (600 hours) of integrated work placements with the Queensland Ambulance Service and many hours of simulation training. This provides you with the opportunity to experience working as a paramedic and directly apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-life situations.

Individuals currently practicing as paramedics can choose from two paths towards their bachelor degree. The EMS Occupational Health and Safety specialisation is designed for paramedics seeking to gain a formal bachelor qualifi cation as well as to develop skills and knowledge in occupational health and safety. In addition, organisers of activities that are regarded as high risk such as motorsports, film and TV productions, and major sporting events, increasingly hire paramedics for these events. Given the increase in demand from industry, and often the remote nature of these projects, having the highest level of emergency patient care with an associated diverse occupational health and safety role is required. The EMS Occupational Health and Safety specialisation will enhance the career opportunities of current paramedics seeking employment in the industry. Those employed by private paramedic services, and current industrial paramedics working within the diverse field outside of pre-hospital emergency care provision, can also benefit from the program. The program meets the current demands of the industry for skilled professionals in paramedic services.

Entry Requirements

You will be required to complete a medical and physical assessment prior to work placement with an Ambulance Service and the work placement is a compulsory component of this program.

You will be required to purchase an approved university clinical placement uniform as a requirement of the Queensland Ambulance Service. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will also need to be purchased as a workplace health and safety requirement.

You are required to obtain a first-aid certificate prior to enrolment in course PMSC11001 Foundations of Paramedic Science.

If you have not studied chemistry you are advised to enrol in an introductory chemistry course at CQUniversity. The recommended course of study is CHEM40079 Introductory Chemistry.

Ambulance Service Employment Conditions: You should be aware before entering the program that ambulance services in Australia have specific requirements for employment that preclude people with certain health conditions. Please see specific state ambulance websites for further details.

EMS Occupational Health and Safety Specialisation Entry Requirements:

Paramedics who currently hold a Diploma of Paramedic Science delivered by a State or Territory Ambulance Service or equivalent, as deemed by the program leader, will be eligible for enrolment in the EMS Occupational Health and Safety specialisation. These paramedics will be given advanced standing in the course with credit for specified courses as deemed by the program leader prior to enrolment.
