The Bachelor of Environmental Science will help you achieve a holistic understanding of the science of environmental processes and challenges and an ability to think systemically and systematically about natural resource management and social and economic development.

The first year of the program (or part-time equivalent) will provide you with a broad foundation of knowledge in environmental studies, as well as developing generic skills in the sciences and social sciences/humanities, emphasising the multidisciplinary nature of environmental studies. Subsequent years will provide you with the opportunity for progressive specialisation. Considerable scope is allowed in your choice of electives, will enable you to develop a particular emphasis in science, humanities/social science, occupational health and safety, or in other fields of interest.

This course provides advanced training in the application of environmental science to problem solving. The course is open to people working as environmental professionals, or seeking to do so, who want to undertake advanced studies in environmental science to broaden their environmental expertise or specialise further in a selected area.

This course facilitates improved awareness of environmental issues from technical, social and political perspectives, and provides more specific knowledge in areas of particular interest to individual students. This course aims to supply leaders to the environmental professions with the interdisciplinary scientific and policy skills required to deal with today's complex environmental problems. Graduates from the course are well equipped to contribute to continuing improvement in environmental management practices.

Entry Requirements

Completion of the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science (AQF Level 8), or an equivalent postgraduate course in a closely related field of education; or equivalent training. For 2014 entry only, a four-year Bachelor degree in Environmental Science or Marine Science, or Postgraduate Diploma of Environmental Management; Environmental Impact Assessment; or Environmental Assessment and Management, or equivalent training.

The Masters of Science in Environmental Science and Policy is a springboard to leadership for environmental professionals. The program gives students a powerful understanding of where the sciences overlap and inform policy while providing insight into how policy is implemented and affects environmental outcomes. The program was designed by academic leaders in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins, in conjunction with experts in applied science at regional and federal institutes and agencies. The focus is on studying the environmental effects of current use on the creation, updating, regulating, communicating and enforcing of environmental policy.

The core curriculum provides the strong foundation of fundamental environmental science and policy required to work at the forefront of the field. A broad range of electives provide curricular flexibility to allow students to tailor their academic experience to suit personal needs and interests. The program supports professional growth opportunities for experienced environmental professionals. It is also appropriate for career changers or those new to the environmental workforce with optional pre-requisite courses providing an entry path for students with limited previous science coursework.

Entry Requirements

1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited US college or university. Programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Meeting the minimum GPA requirement does not guarantee admission. Applicants who received their bachelor’s degree in a country outside of the United States are required to provide a course-by-course credential evaluation and TOEFL scores if English is not their first language.

2. One semester of undergraduate calculus

3. One semester of undergraduate statistics

4. Two semesters of undergraduate general chemistry

5. Applicants who do not have the necessary undergraduate training in calculus, statistics, or chemistry may be offered provisional admission if their other credentials are strong.

6. Applicants who are admitted provisionally due to lack of quantitative skills have the option to:

- Take appropriate courses at an accredited college/university;

- Take 420.301 Quantitative Methods for Environmental Sciences; or

- Pass a math placement test, administered by the admissions staff.

7. Applicants who are admitted provisionally due to lack of training in chemistry have the option of:

- Taking two semesters of general chemistry with laboratory at an accredited college or university; or

- Taking 420.302 Chemistry of Natural Processes.
