The Master of Arts degree provides a deepened understanding of core theological disciplines and opportunities to explore the various arts of pastoral ministry. The degree is designed for those serving the church or preparing for employment at parish, school and diocesan levels. Those seeking personal enrichment through the study of Christian faith are also welcome to apply. Students focus their studies on theological research and are required to complete a research paper.

In consultation with an academic adviser, students select theological courses in the core areas of biblical studies, systematic studies and liturgical/spiritual studies. Students also choose from a wide variety of pastorally oriented courses in religious education, spirituality and spiritual direction, pastoral care and counseling, family ministry, parish education and leadership, pastoral liturgy, youth ministry and social ministry. Students accepted into the M.A. degree program are required to complete a research paper that focuses on a particular pastoral issue or concern and integrates insights and theological methods of inquiry from throughout their program of study

The Youth and Young Adult Ministry concentration focuses on understanding adolescent and young adult religious, spiritual, moral and psychological development; Students choose from among courses in community, family and religious education; curriculum and religious education; adult learning and development and other areas of religious education and pastoral studies. Students are asked to direct their studies in either religious education or pastoral studies as they prepare for a career path as either religious education/catechesis with youth and young adults in parishes, schools, college and university campuses, and dioceses. CSU's Religious and Values Education program is designed to provide teachers of religious and values education with a grounding in biblical, philosophical, ethical, and multi-faith disciplines within religious studies.

Why study this course?

Religious and Values Education is a recent but growing area of activity in Australian schools. Once confined to independent schools operated by religious organisations, Religious and Values Education is increasingly recognised as an important area of public (government) schools that operate on a secular model. In such contexts the emphasis falls on values education rather than religious education, although many schools would allocate the time already mandated for religious education to this area of activity.

CSU’s Master of Arts (Religious and Values Education) offers graduates with prior Education qualifications an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills in religious and values education. The course is designed to offer a mix of learning opportunities such as policy and context, curriculum content, reflective professional practice, and a project tailored to the student’s own context.

The course offers a series of in-depth learning experiences, beginning with a study of recent national and international trends in religious and values education. A set of subjects then focus on recent developments in major curriculum areas within the broad field of religious and values education including teaching the Bible, teaching philosophy of religion, teaching religious ethics, and teaching world religions. Students complete a semester of reflective professional practice before proceeding to advanced studies in either philosophical and ethical enquiry, or in media, popular culture and the arts. The capstone subject for the course is an individual research project in religious and values education.

As businesses and organizations collectively tighten their belts, employers are adding more stringent hiring requirements for new employees, and corporations are placing a stronger emphasis on training in the workplace. Such actions have led to an increased need for qualified adult education professionals in community centers, higher education institutions, and corporate training centers.

To help meet this rising demand, Penn State World Campus has partnered with the College of Education to offer this online master's degree in adult education as well as an online graduate certificate in distance education. All of the credits you earn in the certificate program may be applied toward the requirements for the master's degree in adult education, upon your acceptance into that program.
