Sample Program of Study Selected electives may be taken online or on campus. Core program courses are all available online. Entry RequirementsRegular Degree Admission is granted to the student who wishes to pursue a master’s degree and who has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 (A=4.0). For regular admission, a student must meet all of the admission requirements of the Office of Graduate Education, as well as any additional requirements for the program of their choice. Conditional Admission may be authorized, based upon a recommendation from the department or by the Assistant Provost of Graduate Education and Research, for students who do not meet the requirements of regular admission. Conditional admission can be granted to students in their final semester or session of enrollment in an undergraduate program if the academic record is satisfactory, based on the final transcript sent by the student. The conditions for regular admission are recorded on the letter of admission that is sent to the applicant. Students who fail to meet the conditions of their admission by the completion of 12 semester hours of graduate credit are denied further registration. The determining factors for the conditions of admission are the responsibility of the assigned adviser with the endorsement of the appropriate department head and the Assistant Provost of Graduate Education and Research. Students will not be granted regular admission status until all the requirements and conditions for regular admission have been met.
International applicants 1. Non-native speakers of English must prove an adequate level of English language proficiency for admission into an academic program. English language proficiency for admission can be demonstrated in one of the following ways: English proficiency tests:
TOEFL Score - minimum score of 79 iBT/213 CBT/550 PBT 2. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education 3. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on 24 or more earned undergraduate level credit hours from a U.S. institution of higher education. Credits must include college level English composition and/or speech. 4. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on 12 or more earned graduate level credit hours from a U.S. institution of higher education. 5. Successful completion of Level 112 in the ELS Language School 6. Some individuals who pursue this curriculum and instruction master‛s program are interested in becoming a reading coach or a reading intervention specialist. Students in this program learn to apply theory and educational best practices to the delivery of curriculum, instruction and assessment in order to improve the reading abilities and reading comprehension of their students. The curriculum and instruction master‛s courses are aligned to the International Reading Association standards. Students are provided with the foundation needed to diagnose and assess reading deficiencies and corrective reading strategies. Students will also learn how to develop and implement corrective reading plans and analyze the results. Past trends and the evolution of reading instruction are also explored. Other topics of focus include: foundational theory and research, children and young adult literature, developmental learning and assessments, corrective reading assessment, and instructional leadership and literacy coaching. In addition, there is a focus on elementary reading and writing and a study on the use of textbooks, trade books, literature and electronic texts that are relevant in every elementary content area. An Elementary Practicum is included in this curriculum and instruction master‛s program, which provides an in-depth study of the International Reading Association (IRA) Standards by examining research-based approaches linking assessment and instruction for elementary teachers. Geared toward individuals who are already licensed as teachers, this curriculum and instruction master‛s program does not lead to licensure but may lead to career advancement. Program applicants must submit a copy of a current teaching license or provide evidence of a minimum of one year of teaching experience. In addition, it is essential for students to have access to a K-12 classroom to complete the program assignments.
