This course leads to recognition as a professional nurse in Australia and by mutual recognition in New Zealand (subject to the finalisation of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) accreditation process). This is a graduate entry-level course designed for those who hold an existing AQF Level 7 Bachelor degree or equivalent qualification and who are not registered to practise as a nurse in Australia, and who are seeking a career change to the nursing profession. UNE offers a safe, pleasant rural environment for study and equips nursing graduates with the knowledge and skills to function in both metropolitan and rural healthcare settings. This is important as nursing staff shortages are more acute in the rural sector. UNE nursing graduates are well regarded by employers in the healthcare sector.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) have successfully completed an AQF Level 7 or equivalent Bachelor degree in any discipline area from a recognised university in Australia or overseas, and not be currently registered to practice as a nurse in Australia; and

(b) at least one of the following criteria must be met:

(i) English is the applicant's first language; or

(ii) an IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.5 with no sub-band score less than 6.0 (or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 91 in the Internet-based Text with not less than 22 in the written component and 20 in Listening, Speaking and Reading); or

(iii) successful completion of an advanced EAP program at the University of New England English Language Centre (equivalent to IELTS 6.5).

The Master of Nursing Practice aims to broaden and deepen your theoretical and practice knowledge and is predicated on the notion that registered nurses should practise in ways that extend beyond the technical and practical concerns of nursing to provide leadership, research-based practice and advanced decision making as part of the multidisciplinary health team. This course, therefore, provides research training as well as leadership and specialty expertise to prepare you for leadership roles, and the requirements to undertake research degrees (such as Masters and PhDs).

The flexible course structure has a strong focus on leadership, quality and risk management, and enables you to choose from several pathway options, thus providing you with the opportunity to tailor your studies to meet your career aspirations. Depending on your desired career direction, you can complete this course via one of the following pathways:

leadership and management

advanced clinical practice

specialty practice (intensive care, cardiac care, emergency care, critical care or perioperative nursing - some areas not available to international students )

If you wish to undertake postgraduate studies in intensive care, cardiac care, emergency care, critical care or perioperative nursing, you will complete the Specialty Practice pathway; and following completion of your specialty practice units, can continue your studies to complete the Master of Nursing Practice if desired. Alternatively, you may wish to exit the Masters program early and only complete a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in your specialty practice area of interest, and either of these options are available to you.

If you’re a registered nurse, this degree offers a practical way to take your career forward, by enabling you to step up to an honours degree while continuing to earn. Its flexible, modular approach is designed to meet the needs of nurses working across a range of settings and specialities, in both the NHS and independent sectors. Study options focus on key areas for contemporary nursing – leadership; ageing and the life course; and public health.

This top-up degree gives you credit for your existing nursing qualification (credit transfer). Most students with a DipHE qualification will receive the maximum amount of transferred credit (240 credits), enabling them to start the programme at Stage 3. However, if you receive less than the maximum amount, you may need to complete additional modules at Stage 2.

To register on this qualification, you’ll need to have a Diploma of Higher Education in Nursing or a Registered Nurse qualification.

If your DipHE in Nursing was awarded by The Open University, you can contact us now to register on this degree. If you studied elsewhere, you’ll need to apply for credit transfer to cover the pre-Stage 3 requirements of this degree. Your claim will be assessed, and if there’s any shortfall of credit at Stage 2, you’ll need to devise an appropriate study plan derived from a list of eligible Stage 2 modules.

You must also provide evidence of current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (Current NMC PIN). If you studied at an EU/EEA member state, and are a national of those states, you will be eligible to apply for NMC registration (subject to NMC regulations).

Have earned a master's from a regionally accredited institution with an overall GPA of 3.4 or higher. Applicants with a GPA of 3.0 - 3.39 will be accepted with specifications. Applicants with a GPA below a 3.0 will not be accepted into the University.

Submit a Letter of Intent between 250-400 words demonstrating your ability to prepare for a doctoral journey in a reflective and purposeful way.

All entering Ph.D. learners must have taken a statistics course or research course containing key statistics fundamentals, earning a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a passing grade if the institution does not use the traditional A-F grading systems. This course may be taken at GCU prior to enrolling in doctoral-level courses.

Registered nurses who meet the following criteria are eligible to apply to Gonzaga’s post-master’s online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program:

A master’s degree in nursing with a concentration as a Nurse Practitioner, Health Systems Leadership/Nursing Administration, Nurse Anesthetist, or Clinical Nurse Specialist. Programs must be accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or similar national accreditation. Current MSN students who will complete master’s level coursework prior to the start of DNP classes can still apply. *Final official transcript, APN License (if applicable), and verification of practicum hours must be submitted at completion of MSN program.

A cumulative grade point average (GPA) from master’s-level nursing courses of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale. If GPA falls below a 3.3 please include an explanation of GPA statement.

Documentation of an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) course on an official transcript. If the student has not had an EBP course, he or she can still be fully admitted, but will be required to complete an EBP course prior to starting DNP course work. Gonzaga offers this course and it is available online to DNP students.

Must have taken a 3-semester credit graduate-level inferential statistics or biostatistics course within the last 5 years with an earned grade of B or better. If the student has not had a statistics course, or it does not fall within the time constraints, he or she can still be fully admitted, but will be required to complete a statistics course prior to starting DNP course work. Gonzaga offers this course online to DNP students.

MAT Test Score
You must take the MAT (Miller Analogies Test) and provide a copy of test scores to be admitted into this program. If you have taken the MAT within the last five years, you do not need to retake it, only provide a copy of your test scores. Gonzaga will also accept GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) scores.
