Students in the Bachelor of Media have the opportunity to develop the essential critical and practical skills required for work in a variety of media industries such as film, television, newspapers, radio, advertising, public relations and graphic design, or to work as journalists, freelance producers or media consultants.

Through industry placement and project units, students also develop skills in networking, collaboration and project management. Students have had their work published in a variety of regional, national and international publications and our graduates have worked with numerous media organisations including APN News and Media, ABC Radio and TV, SBS TV and News Limited.

This degree has strong links to the vibrant and energetic creative industries of northern New South Wales and beyond. Graduates are critical and creative thinkers, technologically adaptable, entrepreneurial and imaginative and ready for work in the digital media industry.

The BA in Media and Communications is a unique interdisciplinary 120 credit program that provides you with an opportunity to develop a broad knowledge of media, cultural studies and business along with theoretical and practical skills that are relevant to careers in professional writing, journalism, public relations, communications, and advertising. Entry Requirements

• Have a minimum, the equivalent of a Canadian high school (Grade 12) diploma, with an overall average of 65% or better. This average is calculated based on the grade for British Columbia English 12 (or equivalent) and the best three additional academic Grade 12 courses.
• Bachelor of Commerce applicants must have 65% or better in the BC Principles of Mathematics 11 (or equivalent) unless the applicant has successfully completed equivalent courses in post-secondary education with a grade of ‘C+’ or better, in which case official transcripts are required.
• Applicants with less than 65% in English 12 and/or Principles of Math 11 may be required to take one or both of these courses during their first term concurrently with at least one degree course. The Admissions Committee may decide to admit such applicants with the condition that the student completes a minimum of two (2) UCW courses in the first term and maintains at least a B average. In addition, the Admissions Committee may specify the student may only register part time until the conditions have been satisfied.
Applicants who completed high school or any post-secondary studies outside Canada must also submit:
• Documentation confirming their high school completion was awarded, if not already indicated on official transcripts; and
• Proof of English language proficiency as specified in the “English Language Proficiency” section.
Applicants who have not completed the equivalent of a Canadian High School (Grade 12) diploma, or do not meet the minimum admissions requirements, may be accepted into an undergraduate program. In lieu of a high school diploma, the Admissions Committee will consider if the applicant has the work experience, or a combination of education and experience, that will indicate ability to be successful in their program of study. Applicants generally must:
• Be over twenty-one (21) years of age on or before the first day of classes;
• Have been out of high school for at least two years; and
• Be approved by the Admissions Committee.
Mature Student Admission
Applications can be made under mature student status. To qualify for admission as a mature student, applicants must meet the following criteria:
• Have been out of high school for at least two years;
• Be 21 years of age or older, on or before the first day of classes;
• Have demonstrated a potential for success through academic, professional or volunteer activities and other accomplishments.
All applicants must submit:
• An official high school transcript, sent directly from the school;
• Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions (any colleges, universities, or vocational schools) the student has attended;
• A detailed, chronological resume showing progression in the student’s education and career;
• A Letter of Intent clearly explaining why the applicant is applying as a mature student and outlining the student’s academic intentions. The letter should provide background information and describe any personal qualities that the student feels would contribute to academic success at the university;
• A $150 application fee submitted to a Recruitment Advisor.

English Language Proficiency for International Students

English is the language of instruction at University Canada West. If a student’s first language is not English, one of the following must be submitted:
• English 12 or equivalent from a Canadian high school;
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 233 (computer-based test) or 86 (internet-based test);
• IELTS (International English Language Testing System) overall score of 6.0 or better, with no band less than 5.5;
• PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) overall score of 58
• LPI (Language Proficiency Index) score of 5 or better.
Applicants must arrange for the testing agency / institution to send these scores directly to the Registrar’s Office at University Canada West.

PhD students complete an independent research project under the guidance of a supervisory team. The research is normally completed over a maximum period of 3.0-3.5 years (full-time) or 6.0-6.5 years (part-time).

A fourth year (full-time) or seventh year (part-time) or the remaining part of this can be used to prepare the thesis for examination. The thesis should not normally exceed 80,000 words and must make an original contribution to knowledge and contain work of publishable quality. The thesis must then be defended in a viva voce (oral) examination before a degree can be awarded.

The undergraduate qualification should normally be in a subject relevant to the subject of the PhD/MPhil.

Research degrees are demanding and intensive programmes.

To succeed at this level, applicants must be highly motivated, be able to work independently and as part as part of a team, be able to plan and manage their own work, and have an appropriate familiarity with the discipline and its associated research techniques.

The degree develops knowledge of communication technologies in various cultural, social and historical contexts. Graduates will understand and apply a range of disciplinary methods for studying specific communications media (print, audio and audiovisial, electronic), the changing relations between them and their role in modern society.

Students can study related disciplines such as history, literature, theatre, sociology, political science or psychology.

Researchers can study for an MPhil or a PhD in a broad range of subjects within the media, cultural studies and communication fields. Postgraduate research degrees are offered on a full-time or part-time basis, and we support both traditional research presented through an academic thesis, and research through practice degrees.

Students become members of a thriving research culture within the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research (BCMCR), based in one of the top five media schools in the UK.

Research, consultancy and knowledge transfer activity lie at the heart of the work that we do. With 60 per cent of our research at the university judged to be 'world leading' or of internationally excellent quality in the last Research Assessment Exercise 2008 (RAE 2008), we already have a strong reputation for quality and our ambitions are high for the next Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014).

The BCMCR provides a strong sense of community for all of our researchers. We hold regular research seminars, host regular conferences and symposia and have a dedicated research office that acts as a hub for the research community.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, supervision and support. Candidate will undertake an organised programme of professional and academic development, and receive individual support from specialist supervisors.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have been awarded (or expect to be awarded) a Masters degree in a relevant subject area from a British or overseas university. Exceptional candidates without a Masters degree, but holding a first class Bachelors degree in media studies may be considered.

We also welcome enquiries from potential students without formal academic qualifications but with appropriate levels of professional experience.

Applicants for MPhil will normally be required to have a first or second class honours degree. Those accepted for registration for MPhil may be allowed to apply for transfer to PhD registration at a later date subject to satisfactory research progress.
