Online Instruction Early Degree :: Accredited Universities

The Instructional Specialist degree is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood (EC-YA). The candidate will learn to deal more effectively with diverse candidate learners and move from theory to best practice in the
field. The candidate may choose from areas of concentration that include Reading Specialist PK-12, Elementary Content, and Elementary STEM. Licensure is also available in Reading Specialist.

The master instructional specialist program, International Reading Association standards, is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. The candidate will learn to deal more effectively with diverse candidate
learners and move from theory to best practice in the field. The Reading Specialist PK-12 serves practicing teachers, elementary or secondary, who wish to acquire initial reading specialist licensure with a master’s degree in Kansas.

The master teacher program is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. A candidate for this program is typically an educator that intends to remain in a general education classroom. The candidate will learn to
deal more effectively with diverse student learners and move from theory to best practice in the field. The Elementary Content is designed for educators who wish to improve their teaching, management, and assessment skills.

Each candidate must complete the six starred (*) introductory and research courses within the first 15-21 hours before taking the other required courses in the program. A Core Knowledge Examination over those courses will be given. A Core Knowledge Examination over these courses should be taken during the semester following the completion of the 15 core credits. When the introductory core courses are completed, the Core Knowledge Examination is passed, and admission requirements are fulfilled, the candidate will be removed from probation and allowed to enroll in the remaining coursework.

If you currently possess or are eligible for a Professional Level Five Certificate in Early Childhood Education and are interested in pursuing graduate preparation beyond a Master’s degree, this is the program for you! The Ed.S. in Early Childhood Education is designed to meet the current demands of teachers in grades K-12 and is offered fully online. You will complete content specific requirements in reading education.

This 33 semester hour program is unique in that it will provide you with opportunities to:

- Collaborate with others across disciplines.

- Explore teacher leadership opportunities and develop your leadership skills.

- Apply and extend your content knowledge and pedagogical skills through the examination of curriculum and instruction issues and research.

Entry Requirements

1. Complete requirements for a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

2. Possess or be eligible for a Professional Level Five Certificate in Reading Education. Candidates who have completed all eligibility requirements for the Professional Level Five Certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate.

3. Present a 3.25 or higher GPA on all graduate work attempted.

4. Present current official report from the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) showing competitive scores. Applicants with a Georgia Southern University graduate degree showing a GPA of 3.5 or higher within the previous seven (7) years may exempt the GRE test requirement.

5. Submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies the applicant’s reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to the applicant’s professional aspirations.

6. Submit a completed ‘Disclosure and Affirmation Form’ that addresses misconduct disclosure, criminal background check, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance.

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. Provisional students must earn grades of ‘B’ or higher in their first nine (9) hours of course work after admission and meet any other stipulations outlined by the department to be converted to regular status.

The MS in Childhood Education is intended for teachers who already have initial certification in either of these areas. In either an online or campus-based format, the program focuses on responsive teaching and empowerment for students and teachers. Newly revised in 2013, the coursework brings together current research and policy to prepare teachers to teach children from Birth to Grade 6. Coursework addresses the key components of literacy and content areas instruction, including literacy development, children's literature, science, mathematics, social studies, writing instruction, literacy engagement, strategic literacy instruction, assessment, data-based decision making, critical literacy, family partnerships, and the Common Core Standards. Initial teaching certification in Early Childhood or Childhood is required for admission into this program. The program provides the MS degree needed for progessional certification in New York State in the area of your original initial certificate (i.e., Childhood or Early Childhood). If you are interested in obtaining your literacy certification, please consider the MS in Literacy degree.
