A scientific degree in a subject not listed above which in the opinion of the University included suitable preliminary training and is considered at least comparable to a UK second class honours degree, from an institution acceptable to the University.

Applicants with an appropriate technical qualification and work experience will also be considered.

This programme aims to address the challenges posed by infectious diseases in the 21st Century by offering you courses in surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases, as well as evaluating how they impact public health.

This is a professional postgraduate qualification for biomedical, medical, public health, and veterinary personnel with an interest in global health and infectious diseases.

Entry Requirements

The Master of Science in Health Sciences (MSHS) in Clinical and Translational Microbiology is a 36 credit hour blended program (i.e. combination of online and face-to-face courses) that prepares graduates for careers in clinical microbiology laboratories; careers supporting infectious disease research efforts in universities, academic health centers, biotechnology firms and pharmaceutical companies; careers in public policy and non-governmental organizations; and positions involving prevention, control and eradication of infectious diseases both globally and within the United States.

This course assists health professionals to make rational evidence-based decisions in clinical practice and undertake small clinical research projects. Clinical epidemiology attempts to answer clinical questions relevant to the daily practice of medicine and other health sciences, and to improve patient care. It focuses on individuals or groups of patients in clinical settings. Students complete 7 core units, 3 electives and a minor research project. Core units cover biostatistics, epidemiology, research methods clinical trials, clinical epidemiology, clinical measurement, ethics, good research practice & practical research skills. Electives include chronic diseases: epidemiology and prevention, infectious diseases, meta analysis and systematic reviews, regression methods for epidemiology, advanced statistical methods for clinical research, and injury epidemiology and prevention. Students who successfully complete the research stream and achieve an overall average of HD may progress to a PhD or other Higher Degree by Research. Exit points: Students may be eligible to alternatively exit from the Masters with a graduate certificate or graduate diploma provided the requirements of the alternative exit have been met.
