Healthcare Law and Ethics is concerned with how the law regulates certain aspects of healthcare practice, why it does so, and whether it does so effectively, and in accordance with ethical principles.

The programme has been devised to accommodate busy healthcare professionals. Unlike other programmes, this one is not open to law graduates, but has been designed specifically for those whose first degree is in a healthcare subject such as medicine, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, etc.

The programme aims to give you an understanding and appreciation of law and ethics as they apply to professional practice. It will help you understand legal and ethical concepts, terminology and sources of law.

It is offered on a part-time, modular basis with the emphasis being on Distance Learning. This flexibility allows you to study at a time and place of your own choosing and at a pace that is comfortable for you.

The Adult-Gerontological Health Nurse Practitioner Program prepares nurses as expert providers of primary health care to young adults, adults, older adults and their families across health care settings. The primary focus of the program is to prepare the graduate to promote, maintain, supervise, and restore health, identify health risks, and assess, diagnose, and manage acute and chronic illnesses common in primary care. The ability to function as an educator, leader, consultant, advocate, and change agent is an essential to the development of clinical expertise in this role.

Clinical Practice Portfolio - Applicants to a master's program with a non-nursing bachelor's degree are required to submit a clinical practice portfolio to be evaluated for baccalaureate-level nursing competencies once they have been admitted to a program. The Clinical Practice Portfolio fee is $300. If the portfolio does not meet academic standards, the student cannot be matriculated.

The major emphases of the nurse practitioner tracks are to develop graduates with:

1. A base for continued inquiry and contributions to the art and science of nursing and the knowledge and skills to exert a leadership role in the formulation of healthcare policy,

2. Expertise in the provision of health care, and

3. Leadership ability in today’s healthcare environment.

Students complete courses in theory of advanced nursing practice where they develop skills in making independent clinical judgments as well as participate in experiences involving peer review, client advocacy, the development of collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships and role negotiation. Clinical instruction is carried out by nurse practitioners and/or physicians who model collaborative practice behaviors. This model of instruction allows the student to see the complementary roles of the advanced practice nurse and the physician and demonstrates the unique contributions of nursing to the care of clients.

The A.G.N.P. program prepares nurses to provide a range of healthcare services that promote wellness, prevent illness and manage health and illness needs of adults across the lifespan. The scope of practice of either the primary care or acute care N.P. is not setting specific, but is based on patient care needs. The particular expertise of the primary care A.G.N.P. emphasizes disease prevention, health promotion and the management of patients with acute and chronic multi-system health problems. The patient population of the acute care A.G.N.P. includes care of patients with complex acute, critical and chronic illness, disability and/or injury. The number of credits and clinical hours are determined by requirements for board certification in adult-gerontology. Graduates of the A.G.N.P. M.S.N. track complete a minimum of 600 supervised clinical practice hours and are eligible to sit for national certification in Primary Care or Acute Care through either the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program.

- Graduation from an N.L.N.A.C. or C.C.N.E.-accredited baccalaureate nursing program with a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
