CSU's Doctor of Health Science is designed to provide for the academic and professional development of applicants working in the broad area of the health sciences while allowing significant flexibility to accommodate individual student, industry and/or professional requirements.

CSU's Doctor of Health Science aims to provide a tool for advanced research enabling candidates to contribute in a significant way to the knowledge and practice in their profession. Offered part-time by distance education, the course is designed to provide academic and professional development to applicants working in the broad area of the Health Sciences while allowing significant flexibility to accommodate individual student, industry and/or professional requirements and needs.

Candidates complete course-work and an applied research/professional component, which allows students to develop a research question or topic for investigation by conducting an intensive literature review, critique and reflect on their professional practices. The research/investigation will then be conducted and outcomes presented as reports or publications.

Entry Requirements

Applicants would normally need to demonstrate that they:

are working in an appropriate field within, or relevant to, the health professions and can demonstrate that they have the opportunity and facilities to complete the applied research/investigation components of the course

have had a minimum of five years' relevant professional and/or vocational experience (with relevance being determined by the Doctor of Health Science Course Coordinator in conjunction with the proposed Principal Supervisor). The time taken while enrolled in a relevant Master degree will count towards the five years' required experience

hold a Master degree or equivalent (by coursework) in an approved area of health sciences, with Credit grades or above in all subjects undertaken.

CSU's Master of Health Science aims to promote advanced, critical reflection on professional practice in the health sciences, and to equip graduates with the advanced analytical and conceptual skills required for work in the senior tiers of health science and related sectors.

The Master of Health Science aims to promote advanced, critical reflection on professional practice in the health sciences. This aim has the following components:

to provide opportunity for the candidate to continue lifelong learning in keeping with the University's mission statement

to satisfy the educational needs of professionals working in or aspiring to work in the most senior tiers of the health sciences and related sectors

to promote the acquisition of advanced analytical and problem solving skills and conceptual insights that will enhance the capacity of the candidate to undertake positions of significant responsibility in the health sciences,

and

to encourage excellence in scholarship and/or focused research within the candidate's discipline area.

This course provides existing health care professionals with a knowledge of the properties, desired effects and safety issues of the Western herbal medicines commonly prescribed and dispensed by health care professionals. The options for treatment relevant to a wide range of common conditions encountered by health care professionals and the selection of appropriate and individual treatments, including recommendations on dosage, are examined.

A candidature shall either:

(a) hold a degree of a university in a health related area and have a professionally recognised health qualification and full current practitioner membership of an appropriate professional association approved by the faculty; or

(b) hold the Graduate Diploma in Health Science (Herbal Medicine) from the University of New England.

This is a three-year course that provides students with the knowledge and skills required to work in areas of health promotion, community health development, Indigenous health, and health services management. The course also offers a specialist stream in occupational therapy designed to provide a pathway into the Master of Occupational Therapy offered by Flinders University.

The course has an emphasis on understanding the challenges of working in diverse contexts of urban, rural and remote communities. It also offers an ongoing pathway for VET graduates. The course units provide the prerequisite knowledge and skills for graduate programs in allied health, public health and medicine.

The course will have a range of flexible multi modal delivery options that will include workshops, Learnline, face-to-face delivery and external.

The Masters Degree by Research is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis. The program is governed by the Program Rules for Masters Degrees by Research which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the University will assist you to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

Entry Requirements

You may be considered for admission to candidature for the masters degree if you:

hold an honours degree from the university or any other approved institution in a relevant discipline; or
hold a three year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline; or
hold a three year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience; or
hold a three year undergraduate degree with a credit level grade point average (GPA); or
hold a four year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance; or
holds an alternative qualification deemed by the panel to be of equivalent scope and standard.
Persons holding only a pass degree, and who do not satisfy any of those criteria specified above, will be required to undertake a masters qualifying/enabling program, normally of only one year (full-time) duration, as specified in the University's resolution on masters qualifying programs.
