Online Health Research Degree :: Accredited Universities

This is a web-based programme hosted within the School of Dentistry. The MRes programme provides a combination of interactive online learning and project work to help students to develop a critical evidence-based approach to planning services and improving oral health at a population level. The MRes will develop skills for health services research and be especially suitable for those who wish to study for a PhD subsequently but have limited experience of research.

The MRes comprises 6 course units and a dissertation [180 credits]:

Biostatistics [15 credits]
Epidemiology [15 credits]
Evidence Based Practice [15 credits]
Dissertation/project [90 credits]
Three optional course units [15 credits each] which must include at least one of the following units:
Oral health and Disease in Populations
Implementing Strategy in Dental Services

Qualitative Research Methods [15 credits] is a prerequisite for any students planning a qualitative dissertation.

Students are advised to take at least two core course units in the first year of the course for part-time students, or in the first semester for full-time students.

Academic entry qualification overview

There are two routes of entry:

A recognised primary degree in a dental subject and a preferred minimum of two years post qualification experience

A degree (minimum 2:2) in a non-clinical subject and preferably two years of working experience. Normally the degree will be in a science or social science subject and the individual will be working in some area with a link to oral health. In all cases, the degree held must be from a recognised institution.

English language requirements

International students are required to have acceptable levels of English literacy, as demonstrated by any of the following:

IELTS test 7.0 with no less than 7.0 in the reading and written components and no less than 5.5 in all components)

TOEFL test 600 paper-based (with no less than 5.5 in the TWE - Test of Written English)

TOEFL test 250 computer-based (with no less than 5.5 in the TWE - Test of Written English)

TOEFL test: 100 (internet-based) (Minimum:

Listening/Writing 17, Reading 18 and Speaking 20)

Pearson-Test 66-73 (with no less than 51 each component)

This certification must be no more than 12 months old.

Some English language test results are only valid for two years. Your English language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

On this master’s programme in disaster healthcare you will study the key areas of theory and practice that are relevant to healthcare in complex humanitarian disasters, from resilience and response to mitigation and recovery. It is taught by distance learning and summer schools, and is delivered by international experts, including Professor Kevin Davies and Jeff Evans who has a long history of providing pre-hospital care in austere environments.

A key element of this disaster healthcare course is its strong international and trans-cultural focus, which is needed to develop and maintain relationships between colleagues in the institutions and countries that underpin the programme. You will study on a part-time, distance learning basis, with an annual two-week residential Summer School.

To prepare students to provide high quality care to vulnerable populations in disaster response and through humanitarian assistance.

To promote the analysis of disasters and humanitarian crises through academic study, research and evaluation.

This course is designed for emergency health practitioners interested in improving their clinical knowledge and aspiring to leadership positions in their field of practice.

You will have the opportunity to examine emergency health care from clinical and systems perspectives using local and international contexts and be able to enrol in a stream of study relevant to emergency health that advances your clinical knowledge.

In the last year of the course you will study clinical research in emergency health and have the option of undertaking a clinical project or studying clinical improvement, education or leadership to develop the professional attributes and skills required to practice at an advanced level.

You will learn from experienced practitioners, researchers and educators who have been delivering Ambulance Victoria's education programs for over 15 years, and who take their role as educators of the next generation of emergency health services leaders, managers and researchers seriously.

You'll gain the skills to evaluate and apply effective clinical and management practices, while opening the door to a career as an emergency health provider, educator or researcher.

If you need to exit the program early, you can graduate with a graduate certificate after one year or a graduate diploma after two years of successful study.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have completed a bachelors degree in emergency health, or equivalent undergraduate studies leading to practice as a health professional. In addition, applicants wishing to undertake clinical practicum units will need to demonstrate current relevant health professional registration (or equivalent), and appropriate sponsored support (to be approved by the Course Coordinator). Interstate and international applicants with an equivalent qualification may apply for entry. Such applicants will be assessed on a case by case basis with reference to university credit/Recognition of Prior Learning guidelines. Applicants without an undergraduate degree but with extensive relevant experience may be considered on a case by case basis.

International applicants will need:

to be eligible for professional registration Australia;

to have a current appropriate study visa e.g. Occupational Training Visa; and

a minimum of one year's experience in a relevant clinical health setting.

The term eHealth describes a diverse field concerned with the application of ICT to support the organisation and delivery of healthcare services and to enable citizens to manage their own health and wellness.

eHealth has become a priority area for the international healthcare sector and is attracting considerable global investment. This interdisciplinary programme introduces eHealth in the context of international health systems and global health challenges, supported by specialist courses covering areas such as public health informatics, telehealthcare and mHealth.

It is aimed at a wide audience, including health professionals, policymakers, NGOs, researchers, eHealth vendors and ICT practitioners. The programme is unique in addressing the topic from a truly international perspective, including a consideration of low and medium income economies.

An undergraduate degree, with an excellent or very good classification (equivalent to first or upper second class honours in the UK), in the field of clinical and allied health sciences, informatics, health policy, psychology, allied health sciences or a relevant related subject.

The online Bachelor of Arts degree in global health is an interdisciplinary program designed for those seeking a broad understanding of modern health challenges and their potential solutions.

The global nature of this program is incorporated anthropologically - to understand disease, health and well-being in ways that incorporate a variety of cultures, places and time along with their social, biological, historical, and ecological significance.

The curriculum focuses on developing skills in teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and the importance of direct experience through research, study abroad or related activities. Entry Requirements

Applicants must successfully complete ASU competency requirements. Admission may be granted with one deficiency in no more than two competency areas. Deficiencies cannot be in both math and laboratory science. Students must earn a minimum 2.0 in any subject area. Most competencies may also be met by test scores or college courses.

English - 4 years (composition/literature based)
Math - 4 years - Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and one course requiring Algebra II as a prerequisite.
Laboratory Science - 3 years total (1 year each from any of the following areas are accepted: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Integrated Sciences, and Physics)

Through this process Undergraduate Admissions will review all available information about a student’s application, carefully considering all aspects of a student’s academic background and accomplishments. Submission of an ACT or SAT test score is highly recommended. In some cases, additional information might be requested.
