Show More The School of Education designs its graduate programs to prepare professional educators and educational leaders who have effective speaking, listening, reading and writing skills; knowledge of and appreciation for the humanities, the pure and social sciences and the arts; understanding of and appreciation for education and its role in developing intellectual and ethical values in a free and pluralistic society; the general and specialized professional knowledge base required of informed practitioners of the education profession; and the ability to apply knowledge and research effectively in the education profession. The graduate education programs extend the baccalaureate foundation to address more advanced and specialized studies, expand certifications, and augment minor concentrations or new areas that increase the potential for professional contribution. The School of Education has a responsibility to uphold the highest standards of excellence in preparing education graduates. As such, graduate studies programs focus on providing mastery of professional knowledge, attitudes and skills in focused course credits beyond the baccalaureate. All NMU School of Education subject areas are approved by the Michigan Department of Education. Entry RequirementsRegular Degree Admission is granted to the student who wishes to pursue a master’s degree and who has a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum undergraduate grade-point average of 3.0 (A=4.0). For regular admission, a student must meet all of the admission requirements of the Office of Graduate Education, as well as any additional requirements for the program of their choice. Conditional Admission may be authorized, based upon a recommendation from the department or by the Assistant Provost of Graduate Education and Research, for students who do not meet the requirements of regular admission. Conditional admission can be granted to students in their final semester or session of enrollment in an undergraduate program if the academic record is satisfactory, based on the final transcript sent by the student. The conditions for regular admission are recorded on the letter of admission that is sent to the applicant. Students who fail to meet the conditions of their admission by the completion of 12 semester hours of graduate credit are denied further registration. The determining factors for the conditions of admission are the responsibility of the assigned adviser with the endorsement of the appropriate department head and the Assistant Provost of Graduate Education and Research. Students will not be granted regular admission status until all the requirements and conditions for regular admission have been met.
International applicants 1. Non-native speakers of English must prove an adequate level of English language proficiency for admission into an academic program. English language proficiency for admission can be demonstrated in one of the following ways: English proficiency tests:
TOEFL Score - minimum score of 79 iBT/213 CBT/550 PBT 2. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited U.S. institution of higher education 3. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on 24 or more earned undergraduate level credit hours from a U.S. institution of higher education. Credits must include college level English composition and/or speech. 4. Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on 12 or more earned graduate level credit hours from a U.S. institution of higher education. 5. Successful completion of Level 112 in the ELS Language School 6. Other proof of English proficiency may be considered on an individual basis. Other Fees |
