Diplomatic studies is concerned principally with the modes of diplomacy (for example, the resident ambassador and summitry) and its function (for example, negotiation and information gathering). The subject deals not only with the contemporary period but also with the origins of diplomatic institutions and the development of diplomatic law. This course aims to promote an understanding of the distinctiveness of diplomacy as a political activity of central importance to the peaceful, stable and productive conduct of relations between states; to impart knowledge and stimulate debate concerning the key modes and functions of diplomacy, in both contemporary and historical contexts; to consider international institutions and areas of the world with which professional diplomats might reasonably be expected to be familiar, for example, the European Union. The MA in Global Diplomacy brings together cutting edge research in the broad fields of Diplomatic and International Studies, through award winning distance learning delivery, in a unique manner befitting the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD) at SOAS, University of London. Programme aims The MA in Global Diplomacy will enable you to acquire the knowledge, understanding, skills and aptitudes necessary to proceed to careers in a range of professional diplomatic contexts, while also providing the learning opportunities to enable you, as a postgraduate student, to acquire the interdisciplinary knowledge to undertake further advanced studies and research in the area of global diplomacy. Entry RequirementsAcademic Requirements In order to be considered for admission as an International Programmes student, applicants must also submit an application that is in accordance with the procedures and deadlines set out on the CISD website. To be registered for the MA in Global Diplomacy, an applicant must have, either: • in a relevant discipline, a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree from a UK university or other institution acceptable to the University, or an equivalent international qualification (qualifications in other subjects will be assessed on their merits) Or • in a relevant discipline, previous education and experience without a UK Bachelor’s degree, or international equivalent, that satisfies the University and has included suitable preliminary training. Applications will be welcome from applicants with unconventional career paths and consideration will be given to work experience.
English Language Requirements All applicants must have a high level of English language ability in reading, writing and study skills equivalent to a score of 7.0 in the IELTS test, or 7 in both reading and writing; or a score of 600+ in the TOEFL paper-based test of English, with at least 5.0 in the test of written English; and in the TOEFL internet-based test, you will need a score of 100+, with 25+ in the written English test.
