The MSc Acoustics has two pathways: Audio Applications and Environmental Applications.

Audio pathway

The generation, manipulation and reproduction of high quality audio signals are core elements of the rapidly expanding communication, entertainment and sound engineering industry. The audio pathway aims to train graduates in the acoustic aspects of audio such as digital signal processing, microphone and loudspeaker design, architectural acoustics and sound reproduction.

The Acoustics Research Centre is a lead partner in the BBC Audio Research Partnership working closely with BBC R&D at MediaCityUK.

Environmental pathway

The environmental pathway is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to work in environmental acoustics, including environmental noise consultancy, noise control in industry and acoustic engineering research.

The course is accredited by the Institute of Acoustics which provides external validation of the course quality.

Entry Requirements

A first or second-class degree in a numerate engineering or science discipline. All applicants must have a significant grounding in engineering mathematics

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

The MA in Film Distribution and Marketing (also available by distance learning) has been designed to reflect the industry need for entrepreneurial producers, and film marketing and distribution experts. The course develops students' skills to strategise and apply new and emergent models of film financing, getting to market and engaging audiences, necessary to remain competitive in a fast changing and dynamic global 24-7 entertainment business.

The programme examines old and new business models spanning all aspects of the film development cycle embracing advances in technology, digital communication channels and opportunities to monetise content across a variety of platforms other than traditional cinema.

Students will receive intensive tuition from industry professionals, before working to create and deploy strategies for projects around development/pitching, financing/pitching to investors and distribution/marketing campaigns under the guidance of mentors.

Students have the opportunity to work on real film projects ranging from low to no budget esoteric art house through to more commercially ambitious genres, and across all stages of a film's life cycle from development to production to distribution.

The course will offer a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles and basic core knowledge of film marketing and distribution, and the production process from idea to screen, before examining innovative techniques, and how to manage and adapt to meet the challenges of the new distribution and funding environment.

If candidate is a film, media, marketing, advertising or business graduate with aspirations to work in the film industry this course provides candidate with the opportunity to immerse candidate in a film production environment, put ideas into practice and build a network of film industry contacts to further candidates's career.

Successful students will gain an MA in Film Distribution and Marketing from Birmingham City University.

MA Film Distribution and Marketing is open to applicants who are enterprising, agile thinkers who can demonstrate an interest in film and developing marketing and distribution strategy.

Candidate must be a graduate. If candidate do not have a degree, candidate may be accepted if candidate can demonstrate equivalent experience and / or qualifications.

And/or candidate may have work experience in the sector, such as:

Freelance filmmaking / production

Please note, it is not a requirement to have previous experience working in the sector or to have studied a film related undergraduate programme, as the course will provide a thorough grounding in the fundamental principles and basic core knowledge of film marketing and distribution.

International (non-EU) students also require the following:
