Entry Requirements

Applicants should be working in the field of cardiovascular practice and hold an honours degree or a diploma in a health related discipline and evidence of continuing professional development that shows an ability to study at master’s level.

Applicants for the Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiovascular Practice must normally have successfully achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Cardiovascular Practice or similar award.

Applicants for the Masters in Cardiovascular Practice must normally have successfully achieved a Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiovascular Practice or similar award.

Applications will be encouraged from non-standard entrants with relevant experiential learning. The Course Director will use their discretion to accept applications on the basis of experience.

The general requirements for admissions are in line with University policy (Academic Regulations 2.7). Students whose first language is not English are normally required to have IELTS>6.5 (preferably with a high mark in the written component), TOEFL computer-based >250.

Alongside specific admissions criteria outlined – applicants must provide 2 references, one should be an academic and the other clinical.

Bachelor of Health and Rehabilitation Science graduates will develop a holistic approach to health and rehabilitation, inclusive of physiological, anatomical, psychological and socio-cultural factors. Become a skilled, flexible and accountable healthcare worker capable of meeting the challenges and future needs of the Australian healthcare system.

This three-year degree will enable students to develop comprehensive knowledge and skills that support generic practice in a range of health settings. Students will develop:

An understanding of the principles of rehabilitation

Extensive knowledge of anatomy and how the body functions

Knowledge about human development

An understanding of psychology and sociology

Extensive knowledge of disease and the medications used to treat disease

Skills in how to run a health education/community development program

Knowledge of exercise science, including musculoskeletal and cardiovascular functioning

Skills and knowledge in communication and group work

A sound foundation for entry into professional health degrees.

Students may choose to exit the course with the University Certificate in Health and Rehabilitation Science upon satisfactory completion of the first seven subjects (64 subject points). Study to this level will provide students with an introduction to generic health concepts and skills.
Students may choose to exit the course with the Associate Degree in Health and Rehabilitation Science upon satisfactory completion of the first 14 subjects (128 subject points). Study to this level will provide students with generic health knowledge and skills that enable graduates to engage in supervised practice in a range of settings.

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Specialisation) provides you with the opportunity to work in an exciting and rewarding career in one of three specialist areas including Clinical Investigation, Nutrition or Pathology. Each of the specialist areas explores relevant health and disease issues.

In order to help you determine your desired and most suited career path, you will gain exposure to foundation knowledge in sciences, study and research skills and health professional practice throughout your fi rst year of study in this degree. You will then be asked to decide on your specialist interest area at the end of your fi rst year.

Clinical physiologists (Clinical Investigation) measure function within the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system to exclude or confirm disease and then monitor progress in response to therapy.

Nutritionists are concerned with promoting and maintaining healthy lifestyle choices and preventing diet-related diseases in our communities. Nutritionists work in a number of industries including health promotion, public health, Indigenous health, food services, food or health corporations and engage in further study or research in public health nutrition, nutrition and dietetics, education, health service management, and environmental health.

Medical laboratory scientists, specialising in pathology, examine bodily samples to assist in making a diagnosis regarding a patient’s medical condition.

The program has been developed in consultation with key industry bodies and professionals and incorporates up to 480 hours of work integrated learning during each three year program. This ensures you graduate with the practical skills required to be career-ready and highly attractive to prospective employers. If you choose to study the program by distance education, you have the flexibility to fit study with your work and other lifestyle commitments. There is also an option to exit the degree after successful completion of the first 16 courses with an Associate Degree of Medical Science (Specialisation).

The Nursing program requires applicants to have an associate degree or diploma in nursing from a state board of nursing approved registered nurse program. Students who do not meet the 2.5 GPA requirement may apply for admission to the Nursing program on a provisional status. Upon successful completion of the first semester of the nursing curriculum, a student may apply for a change of status from provisional admission to the full admission.
