UNC-Pembroke's Bachelor of Science in Business Administration will prepare you for a wide variety of careers in retailing, manufacturing, health care, state and federal government, banking, the hospitality industry, and university and college administration. In the online program, you may concentrate in economics, where opportunities in economic consulting and research are countless. All of the courses in your major are available online but you may be required to come to campus for courses outside your major, or find transferable courses at another accredited university. The courses in the online program are the same courses offered in the on-campus program and have been designed by the regular faculty. Course delivery is asynchronous and enhanced by various interactive Internet-based learning applications. Regular UNC-Pembroke faculty members teach your online courses, with some adjunct faculty approved by the School of Business.

Students majoring in Economics develop theoretical and analytical skills useful for decision making. These are applied to a range of topical, significant policy issues. Economics focuses on complex interrelationships, whereby a change in one area will have repercussions elsewhere. Most of life’s important questions are of this nature. Economics training at Massey University will enable you to analyse these matters in a realistic fashion.

The BBS (Economics) degree provides a broad and well-rounded education in business. Selecting this option provides you with a strong grounding in Economics, but in a programme that is less rigorous and specialised than the Bachelor of Applied Economics.

In addition to Economics training, you will gain a broad understanding of other business disciplines such as finance, banking, management, and information systems. If you see yourself as a future dynamic business leader who will use a solid knowledge of economics to help ensure the success of your company, this is the degree for you.

The Economics major in the BBS degree programme has few compulsory requirements and lots of flexibility. It builds on a standard core of economic theory, with additional papers chosen from a wide range of electives, allowing students to specialise in any of a number of areas. In addition to quantitative methods and more advanced theory, these include international trade, resource and environmental economics, financial economics, managerial economics, and public policy.

While you may not intend to major in Economics, many students have found that a selection of Economics papers can be a useful complement to their chosen major. However, if you think you might want to pursue postgraduate studies in Economics, it’s very important to plan early and seek academic advice. In consultation with us, you can design your Economics major to meet your interests and career objectives.

There are no special entry requirements for the Economics major beyond those that qualify you for study at the University. A major in Economics can be taken internally at the Manawatu and Albany campuses; it can also be taken extramurally but with a more limited range of papers. In order to widen your choice of papers, or to fit in with your other commitments, you may opt for a mix of internal and extramural papers.
