Applicants seeking a master's degree from the College for Professional Studies must possess a baccalaureate degree in any field of study from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university.

Applicants must demonstrate an ability to achieve graduate-level writing and critical analysis before admission to the Master of Arts degree program.

Anthropology is the study of what it means to be human through the lens of cultural diversity. Sociology examines how human actions in modern societies are shaped by social groups and by wider social, economic and political pressures. Both fields share a common interest in the comparative study of human societies in all their historical and contemporary variations.

This major draws upon the combined strengths of the closely related fields of anthropology and sociology to enhance interdisciplinary research and professional practice. You will focus on local and global contexts, particularly in Australia, South Asia, South-East Asia and East Asia and the Pacific.
You will explore how cultural practices, institutions, social groups and everyday life are being transformed in the context of globalised communication, economic, political and environmental change.

You will also learn practical and conceptual skills to respond to global and local change. This major allows you to explore contemporary issues including family, sport, gender relations, media, education, work and economic change, community development, health, crime and human rights.

The anthropology and sociology major is offered as part of the Bachelor of Arts. You can enhance your studies with a secondary major or choose from a range of elective units to support your career goals.

CSU's Master of Arts (Honours) is a research program applicable across a wide variety of disciplines, wherein the student, with the aid of a supervisory team, will develop a proposal and undertake focused research culminating with the submission of a thesis.

Priority areas for the Master of Arts (Honours) by research and thesis include Australian history, Australian literature, communication and culture, drama, fine arts, justice studies and police studies, professional and applied ethics, psychology, sociology, rural social studies, social work, social welfare and social policy, and theology.

Entry Requirements

An applicant for admission to candidature for a Master degree by research shall normally have either:

qualified with the award of a Bachelor degree with Class 1 or Class 2 (Division 1) Honours from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent;

or

qualified with the award of a Graduate Diploma equivalent to a fourth year of academic study from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent containing a research component with a minimum of a Distinction average overall and a Distinction for the research component;

or

successfully completed a coursework master degree from Charles Sturt University or an award accepted as equivalent; with a Distinction average overall and a Distinction for the research component;

or

have demonstrated in scholarship or professional performance, potential to undertake research at the Master level. (In such cases the applicant must supply a justification for entry to the Master program and supporting evidence).

In the Internet Communications major you can examine the human dimension of the internet: how people network, collaborate and share information through internet communications, media and design.

It is designed to prepare you for a career in areas such as media and communications, marketing, content management, internet policy, social media management and website design and development.

What the course involves
In this major, you can develop advanced skills in creating, maintaining and managing online communications and gain an understanding of their social and cultural contexts.

You can learn the significance of social media, analyse political and social uses of the internet and develop skills in:

The journalism component of this course prepares students for the professional practice of journalism and/or business. It addresses all production technologies for journalism - print, video, radio and online - in metropolitan, regional and international contexts. It imparts advanced skills in research and communication for professional practice, fosters a critical understanding of the role of journalism and the media in contemporary Australian society, in all its diversity and dynamism, and is founded in the principle that robust and accurate journalism is an essential component of a democratic society. Graduates can expect to possess high order skills in professional practice and scholarly analysis that will enable them to find appropriate industry employment, and enter further study at a higher level as and when needed.

The science component of this course provides students with a broad, general science education, as well as specialist training in one or more science disciplines. The flexibility of the course and the wide range of areas of specialisation allows students to explore new areas, further develop their strengths in science and to pursue their interests. The emphasis on generic skills - quantitative literacy, data analysis, information literacy, problem solving, communication and presentation skills, and the capacity to work in teams - and specialisation in at least one discipline ensures a firm foundation for a career in science. Graduates will be equipped for a variety of careers or for honours and postgraduate study, leading to global employment opportunities in any of the traditional and emerging careers for scientists.
