Show More This major explores a range of contemporary issues affecting Australian Indigenous peoples' life experiences and aspirations. It provides students with opportunities to engage with both the resilient nature of Australian Indigenous cultures as well as contemporary forms of Indigenous cultural expression, including song, dance, story, art, film and theatre. A range of interdisciplinary conceptual tools is utilised, including critical race theory and emerging Indigenous critical theory, to further the project of decolonising knowledges on and about Indigenous peoples. In so doing, the major also encourages students to examine the issues of personal and national identity, and the relationship between these, themselves and Aboriginality. Take advantage of our course's special features This AIS major offers you unique experiences such as being able to:
Participate in a Nyungar cultural immersion course, which includes daytrips to sites of significance around Perth and a four-day down-south field trip (fees apply). Show More China has emerged as a major player in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. New Zealand looks increasingly towards the Chinese-speaking world in overseas relations and trade. New Zealand is a multicultural society and home to a substantial number of ethnic Chinese, for whom Chinese is their first language. By focusing on skills in oral and written Chinese, you can take language papers from beginner to advanced levels. Alongside the language papers are a variety of cultural papers which examine topics such as Chinese history, society, and film. Cultural papers do not require any knowledge of the Chinese language. Students can study Chinese in combination with other disciplines relevant to New Zealand's relations with the Chinese-speaking world, such as business or social work.
Speakers of Chinese dialects are welcome to enrol in the programme for serious study of Modern Standard Chinese. Native speakers of Chinese intending to major or minor in Chinese must consult the Programme Coordinator before enrolling to discuss the appropriate selection of language papers for the major or minor. Show More Knowledge of the Classical World of ancient Greece and Rome is essential if we are to appreciate our own culture and civilisation. The Greeks and Romans had a profound and lasting influence on language and thought, particularly in philosophy, law, politics, art, and architecture. They also created and developed nearly every genre of literature. We are, in the deepest sense, their descendants. University study of the literature, history, art, and society of the ancient world involves the critical examination of important questions that arise from this heritage. We investigate the way the ancient world reacted to intellectual and physical challenges. Today, many issues first raised in the classical world remain unresolved. You can structure your major or minor to suit your interests. Study the classics using a Greek or Roman perspective, or combine both to gain a general overview of the classical world. The classical world can be studied from many perspectives: philosophy (some of the greatest philosophers came from this period), Greek or Roman history, mythology, war, religion, art and society, even love and sexuality.
