Entry Requirements

You'll need a suitable Bachelors degree or equivalent, or be able to show that you can study at a postgraduate level. Our APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) programme recognises skills and knowledge you have gained through working.

You must be a qualified nurse in your country of residence with at least 12 months of appropriate experience. You can be located anywhere in the world but you'll need access to a computer with a broadband internet connection.

An undergraduate degree in healthcare related practice (e.g. nursing) and a minimum of 3 years' post-qualification experience. (Lower qualifications may be considered at the discretion of the Programme Director and the Nursing Studies postgraduate team.)

Please provide a concise account (500 words maximum) of your clinical experience and the expertise you have developed during your career as a healthcare professional. You may evidence these gains noting a range of settings and roles including voluntary and unpaid work. The Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Nursing with an Emphasis in Nursing Leadership in Health Care Systems (Dual Degree) is designed to afford experienced nurses having completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with the opportunity to develop cross-functional business management skills and leadership competences appropriate to preparing individuals in the nursing and health care fields for advanced management and executive positions.

This masters in nursing leadership and management program goes beyond patient care and studies the business side of health care by examining the costs, how to set and maintain a budget, and the management of workforce challenges. Graduates of this degree may be prepared to either fulfill an entrepreneurial goal and start their own health company or move into a leadership role within a health care organization, such as Chief Nursing Officer, VP of Patient Services, or Chief Executive Officer.

The following topics are included in the masters in nursing leadership and management: leadership theory and application, finance, accounting, economics, quantitative methods, marketing management, managerial accounting, managerial finance, operations management, and ethics in the healthcare system. Other courses examine nursing as a profession and a discipline and the role of the nurse as a vital member of the interprofessional team providing patient-centered care. Students will explore and learn to apply the theoretical foundations for nursing practice. The behavioral forces and relationships that influence organizational effectiveness and change are studied, as well as intervention strategies and application skills. Nursing and health care research and its application to nursing education, nursing practice, and the delivery of health care services will also be explored. Emphasis is placed on strategies to access current and relevant data, synthesize the information, and translate new knowledge into practice.

A capstone course culminates the program, which provides an opportunity for students to develop an evidence-based practice project proposal that addresses a business problem, issue, or concern in professional practice. Students identify a problem amenable to research-based intervention; search literature; propose a solution; and develop a plan to implement the solution, evaluate its outcome(s), and disseminate the findings.

The online D.N.P. will prepare graduates to provide the most advanced level of nursing care for individuals and communities. You can be trained in the following areas:

• Direct care of individual patients
• Management of care for individuals and populations
• Administration of nursing systems
• Development and implementation of health policy

The eight-semester D.N.P. program is designed to fit the busy schedules of full-time nurses, building on Georgia Southern’s outstanding record in graduate nursing education. Through the D.N.P., you can also be prepared for a career as a nurse educator. The D.N.P. program is fully online with the exception of a week-long on campus intensive that occurs annually each summer.

Entry Requirements

1. Education:

a. Post-BSN: Bachelor’s degree in the proposed field of study (BSN) or its equivalent from a college accredited by the appropriate accrediting association. (Note: post-BSN, and RN/BSN, RN/MSN students must complete all MSN courses prior to beginning the DNP curriculum.)

b. Post-MSN: Master’s degree in the proposed field of study (MSN) or its equivalent from a college accredited by the appropriate accrediting association.

2. Minimum undergraduate or graduate GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale)

3. Satisfactory GRE or MAT scores

a. Official scores from the GRE (General Test) or MAT (Miller Analogy Test), taken in the last five (5) years. An original copy of the test score, sent by the testing agency to the Office of Admissions, is required before any action is taken on an application. A copy of the score provided to the student and subsequently forwarded is not acceptable. The requirement for completion of a standardized test will be waived for those applicants who hold a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited college or university.

b. DNP applicants, who hold a terminal degree (doctorate) or who have a 3.0 GPA in doctoral program at a regionally accredited university, may be considered for admission without submission of official GRE or MAT scores.

c. All international applicants, including resident and non-resident aliens, whose native language is not English and who do not have an undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. college or university, are required to submit official TOEFL scores taken within the year immediately preceding the requested semester of admission. A minimum total score of 83, and minimum scores of 20 for each of the skills evaluated by the TOEFL: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) An original copy of the test score, sent by the testing agency to the Office of Admissions is required before any action is taken on an application. The copy of the score provided to the student and subsequently forwarded is not acceptable.
