Online Advanced Midwifery Practice Degree :: Accredited Universities

Our course is for midwives who are passionate about their practice and wish to develop their knowledge and skills to an advanced level. It will enable experienced midwives to develop the skills of independent thinking required for advanced midwifery practice. The specialist modules that make up this course will encourage you to further develop and enhance your existing knowledge and skills, both by exploring how to promote normality during childbirth and how to care for vulnerable women with complex needs. The supporting optional modules will help you to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for assuming leadership roles in clinical practice or research.

Whilst academically challenging, this course is designed to provide midwives with both the knowledge and skills to enhance their practice to an advanced level. The confidence gained from a sound understanding of the physiology of birth will aid practitioners wishing to promote midwifery care in highly medicalised institutions or in the community.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold an appropriate Midwifery qualification and have at least one years post-qualification experience of working as a midwife and evidence of appropriate continuing professional development.

Applicants will usually have an Honours degree or equivalent qualification. International applicants will be required to demonstrate the university standard of English language (IELTS) at Level 6.5 (including written English) prior to commencement on a course.

As this course is delivered online, access to a personal computer with a good connection to the internet is necessary (broadband recommended).

Similar to our MSc Advanced Practice and Applied Education course, this route allows you to apply advanced practice and applied education to the specialisation of midwifery.

This part-time course allows you to extend your career in midwifery, with the emphasis on teaching and learning methods. Rather than producing technicians, it aims to enhance the quality of maternity care by fostering a broader, deeper and more critical approach to midwifery and education. The course will prepare you for a deeper involvement in the development and communication of the theories behind your practice.

The applied education element of this course allows you to register on the 'teacher' division of the NMC. The course is also recognised by SEDA (the Staff and Educational Development Association), and accredited by the HEA (Higher Education Academy).

This course's aim is to encourage independent and autonomous learning, along with confident teaching and communication techniques. Entry Requirements

The entry requirement for this course is a UK degree. We look for applicants to have a background in Professionals caring for the public in order to be eligible for the programme.
We may also consider lesser qualifications if you have sufficient relevant work experience within the industry.
If English is not your first language, it is usually required that you sit an English language test in order to gain entry onto our postgraduate programmes. This course requires the standard IELTS 6.0 with no individual component score of less than 5.5 or equivalent.

This two-year program begins with the first year of advanced practice nursing content offered by Old Dominion in the Tidewater region and at distance sites. The second year will be offered by the Nurse-Midwifery program at Shenandoah University. The Master of Science in Nursing will be awarded by Old Dominion University and a Certificate of Endorsement in Nurse-Midwifery will be awarded by Shenandoah University.

Graduates will be eligible to take the national nurse-midwifery certification examination offered by the American Midwifery Certification Examination to become a Certified Nurse-Midwife.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for this MSN program, you must have:

1. A baccalaureate degree in nursing from a NLNAC OR CCNE accredited program (preferred) or a bachelor's degree in a related field. Degrees earned from nationally accredited institutions do not meet admission requirements for graduate study at ODU.

2. An undergraduate degree with quality grade point average of 3.0 overall and
- 3.0 in the major
- undergraduate courses in statistics and health assessment

3. One year of recent clinical nursing experience, preferably post-baccalaureate experience.

4. A current license as a registered nurse.

5. Requires TOEFL score for non-native English speakers (ODU requires a score of 550 on the paper-based TOEFL, and a 79-80 on the iBT)
