The program prepares these teachers to employ diverse and effective instructional practices to enrich, extend, and accelerate the standard curriculum for gifted students, and to be collaborative instructional leaders who are knowledgeable, effective, reflective, and responsive to equity and diversity for gifted students. Upon completion of the M.Ed. program, graduates will qualify for the North Carolina Standard Professional 2 (SP2) teaching license in Special Education: Academically or Intellectually Gifted. The online M.Ed. in AIG is a part-time graduate-level program delivered using Centra and Moodle. The M.Ed. in Elementary Education has been designed for experienced educators who teach in the state of North Carolina and wish to become instructional leaders, advanced practitioners, and global educators. The program promotes an educational philosophy that values globalization, cultural knowledge, and multiple worldviews. Successful graduates will possess comprehensive pedagogical, conceptual, and reflective knowledge that can be applied to effectively address all facets of teaching in the elementary education classroom. They will improve their educational practice through self-reflection and applied research, and serve as collaborative educational leaders. Graduates will also acquire advanced content knowledge in a specific concentration area of their choosing. The M.Ed. in Elementary Education requires a total of 33 hours of courses to be taken in three sequenced phases: Developing Perspectives (9 hours), Collaborative Inquiry (6 hours), and Investigative Leadership (3 hours), plus 3 hours of electives. The remaining 12 hours are completed in specific concentration areas (Academically or Intellectually Gifted, STEM, Special Education, and Elementary Mathematics), which are delivered online and can be completed at times throughout the program. This 100% online program offers the completion of elementary education courses at a part-time pace, completing the requirements for the Master of Education in 33 semester hours by using online teaching and learning tools such as Moodle, an online course management platform, and Centra, the University’s synchronous classroom meeting software.
