AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY

According to The Australian Sociological Association (TASA), sociology focuses on the organisation of social life. It looks at how people’s lives are influenced by their opportunities and experiences; and the impact that people have on society through taking action and creating change. Sociology provides insights into the ways factors such as class, wealth, race, gender, ethnicity, age, sexuality, disability and religion shape people’s lives, but this is only one part of it. Sociologists question the common-sense and popular explanations of social life and look at the dynamics of power and inequality in everyday life. The Australian Society specialisation will be the lens that students use to apply their sociological knowledge and skills to wider Australian society.

SOCIAL RESEARCH

There is a growing demand in Australia and internationally for people with graduate qualifications in social research methods. Upon graduation you will have practical skills in social science research that can be applied in government, NGOs (non-government organisations), and private organisations. Graduates will gain a solid foundation for undertaking, overseeing and evaluating research within the employment sector or for further studies within the social sciences. In particular, students taking this major will develop knowledge and understanding of research methods, analysis and statistical techniques.

By learning to tell stories based on data, you gain an integral voice within your organization when the conversation turns to interpreting findings and taking action.

This online master’s in applied statistics is taught by the same faculty and features the same innovative curriculum as the on-campus applied statistics master’s program, allowing you to earn the exact same degree as on-campus students, but with the flexibility you need. Curriculum spans topics from survey statistics and regression modeling, to environmental statistics and simulation.

The program features a unique six-week capstone consulting course that gives you the opportunity to practice the communication skills that employers are looking for during a hands-on project integrating what you’ve learned into a professional scenario. This Master of Applied Statistics is considered a terminal degree and is not intended for those who wish to continue toward a Ph.D.

Entry Requirements

The Master of Applied Statistics (M.A.S.) requires applicants to have the following:

- A four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited university

- Three semesters of calculus (or at least through multiple integration)

- A course in linear algebra

- At least one undergraduate-level statistics course

- GRE scores are required.

The Master of Arts Degree by Research is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis which makes a contribution to knowledge. The program is governed by the Program Rules for Masters Degrees by Research, which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the university will assist you to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

CQUniversity offers Masters Degree by Research programs in the areas of communication and media studies, human welfare studies and services, language and literature, law, master of arts, political science and studies and studies in human society.

Entry Requirements

You may be considered for admission to candidature for the Masters degree if you:

hold an honours degree from the University or any other approved institution in a relevant discipline; or

hold a three (3) year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline; or

hold a three (3) year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one year's relevant work experience; or

hold a three (3) year undergraduate degree with a credit level Grade Point Average (GPA); or

hold a four (4) year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance; or

hold an alternative qualification deemed by the Panel to be of equivalent scope and standard.

If you hold only a pass degree, and who do not satisfy any of those criteria specified above, you will be required to undertake a Masters qualifying/enabling program, normally of one (1) year's (full-time) duration, as specified in the University's resolution on Masters qualifying programs.

CSU's Master of Arts (Classical Arabic) enables students to develop proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Arabic so they can understand the Qur'an in its original Arabic language, and enhance other Islamic studies.

Why study this course?

The Master of Arts (Classical Arabic) at CSU was developed in response to demand from students and the Islamic community for a dedicated program of study focusing on developing skills in reading, writing and speaking the Arabic language in addition to analysing classical Arabic Islamic text.

The Classical Arabic program aims to enable students to read and recite the Qur'an in its original Arabic using recitation rules, study Arabic grammar and textual structures so they can access and understand classical primary Islamic texts, provide exposure to Arabic terminology in core Islamic disciplines, and develop a proficiency in modern standard Arabic so students can access contemporary Islamic scholarly discourse.

You will study core subjects focusing on different aspects of Arabic language, including one subject offering the opportunity to study at a respected Arabic university. You can also select an elective enabling you to focus on Arabic language and Qur'an reading, or Arabic language and Tajweed (Qur'an recitation).

Applicants to the Graduate Certificate in Arts (Classical Arabic), Graduate Diploma of Arts (Classical Arabic) or Master of Arts (Classical Arabic) should hold a bachelor degree in any discipline.

Applicants without an undergraduate degree may be admitted at the discretion of the Course Coordinator.

Geography explores the relationships between people, places and environments.

As our worlds have become increasingly interconnected, fast-paced and more complex due to technological and social change; symptoms of this speed and complexity include disconnectivity, restrictions on mobility and competition for resources. This makes Geography more relevant than ever.

You will learn how to integrate various perspectives in social research and natural science to identify practical solutions to issues surrounding: population growth; food security; migration; natural hazards; climate change; global cities; sustainable development; health and wellbeing; power and place; and, the emerging creative economies.

Geography is offered as part of the Bachelor of Arts. You can enhance your studies with a secondary major or choose from a range of elective units to support your career goals.

When coupled with Economics you can complete this major as part of our Bachelor of Arts or our Bachelor of Commerce. Your choice will determine your core units.

You can also study this major as part of a Science and Arts double degree.
