Show More The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a research training program in a professional context which aims to develop the independent research skills of students under the supervision of academic experts. Graduates are expected to develop the necessary skills to design and conduct research projects, present and defend research findings, and undertake critical analysis on complex issues, making an original contribution to knowledge in their chosen discipline and deepening their knowledge of their professional discipline. The PhD comprises one third coursework and two thirds research culminating in a thesis which will be examined by at least two independent assessors with expert knowledge in the research area. The coursework component includes studies in research methodology, undertaking a literature review, development of a research proposal, and the option of undertaking further advanced coursework in the discipline. Torrens is currently offering online or on campus PhDs in two broad fields of study – Management and Commerce, and Education, and on-campus only in the broad field of study of Health. Entry RequirementsA Masters degree either by research or by coursework with a substantial element of research work from an Australian institution or recognised equivalent qualification, or a relevant first or second class Honours degree from an Australian institution or recognised equivalent qualification TUA may accept an applicant who does not meet these requirements if it is satisfied that the applicant’s experience in research demonstrates that they have the capacity to pursue the program successfully. Acceptance into the TUA PhD program is contingent on the applicant’s proposed field of study and research being acceptable to the University and able to be appropriately supervised and resourced. Show More The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) aims to train students in research techniques and methodologies, and critical evaluation skills. Students undertake independent supervised research within the context of their discipline or practice culminating in a thesis that demonstrates a sound knowledge of their research subject, evidence of independent thought, and high level communication skills. The MPhil comprises one third coursework and two thirds research. The coursework component includes studies in research methodology, undertaking a literature review, development of a research proposal, and the option of undertaking further advanced coursework in the discipline. The completed MPhil is a pathway to a PhD. With the agreement of their supervisors, students may also be eligible to transfer to the Doctor of Philosophy before completion if they have met certain milestones.
