In addition to providing the student with a systematic understanding of the scientific/technological principles and techniques involved in hydrogen safety, this programme aims to develop the skill and expertise to apply this knowledge to the provision of safety in a wide range of hydrogen applications. Show More Recent concerns about CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts of fossil-fired power plants and the country's continued dependence on foreign oil have created a renewed interest in nuclear power generation and overall demand for nuclear power. And the United States isn't alone in recognizing the value of nuclear power. As energy consumption continues to grow, many countries — especially those in Asia with growing economies and increasing energy demands — are turning to nuclear power as a dependable supply for their energy needs. Although people often think of nuclear power plants when it comes to nuclear engineering, there are an increasing number of nuclear engineers working in a variety of fields such as medicine, manufacturing, agriculture, and security. Why an Online Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering from Penn State? The nuclear engineering graduate program at Penn State is ranked fifth in the nation and we have been pioneers in online education with a successful program for more than 15 years. Additional studies also indicate that even if the United States does not construct any reactors, the nation will still need to graduate hundreds of additional nuclear scientists and engineers each year to fill the demand. Who Should Apply? Pursuing this online degree gives you great flexibility combined with a highly relevant course curriculum. The Master of Engineering in Nuclear Engineering (Nuc E) is designed for students with an undergraduate degree in an engineering discipline, or the applied sciences from an ABET-accredited institution, who wish to pursue a graduate degree in nuclear engineering. Career Opportunities for Graduates Many nuclear engineers work in private and governmental research and development laboratories. Some teach in colleges and universities. Other engineers are employed in nuclear power plants and in factories that make nuclear equipment. Still others may work primarily in design engineering or designing and developing new devices to generate nuclear power. Additional opportunities for employment include:
electrical utility companies Entry RequirementsFor admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold either (1) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. This degree must be from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates. The program contains a number of courses requiring a solid background in mathematics typically found in an undergraduate program in engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, or computer science, with at least two semesters of calculus. Students with other undergraduate majors who have a strong background in mathematics may apply. All applicants are expected to have earned a junior/senior grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, which requires completion of specified remedial English courses ESL 114G (American Oral English for Academic Purposes) and/or ESL 116G (ESL/Composition for Academic Disciplines) and attainment of a grade of B or higher. The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS is 6.5. Graduate programs may have more stringent requirements. Other Fees |
