Online Curriculum Instruction Early Education Degree :: Accredited Universities

The degree in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) is designed to meet the needs of individuals who work (or plan to work) in some kind of an instructional capacity. The degree does not lead to a South Dakota teaching certificate nor does it lead to an endorsement on the South Dakota teaching certificate.

Students are able to choose from either a program in which only coursework is required or a program in which they must complete a research project. If a student elects to take only coursework (Plan C), the student must complete a minimum of 35 credit hours in order to graduate. If the research option is chosen, the student must complete a minimum of 32 credit hours including 788 Research Problems.

The C&I degree is structured to allow a great deal of flexibility. It is expected that students will take a mixture of required courses and elective credits, depending on their areas of interest. These courses may be completed with no intention of seeking a degree, or may be used as part of the basis for completing a C&I degree.

This master's program prepares individuals to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of children from birth through 8 years old.

Through online coursework, applied activities and in-person clinical experiences, the program equips students with specialized skills and advanced knowledge in early childhood pedagogy, community collaboration, technology, administration, policy analysis and advocacy.

The master's degree is appropriate for students interested in learning about early childhood education research and working with infants and children in grades K-3. This track may be of interest to students who already have a teaching certificate and are interested in furthering their knowledge and skills or pursuing doctoral studies in the future.

All courses are online, but practicum placement are completed in person. Students seeking certification in a state other than Arizona should contact their state department of education to determine the early childhood education requirements prior to applying."

If you currently possess or are eligible for a Professional Level Five Certificate in Early Childhood Education and are interested in pursuing graduate preparation beyond a Master’s degree, this is the program for you! The Ed.S. in Early Childhood Education is designed to meet the current demands of teachers in grades K-12 and is offered fully online. You will complete content specific requirements in reading education.

This 33 semester hour program is unique in that it will provide you with opportunities to:

- Collaborate with others across disciplines.

- Explore teacher leadership opportunities and develop your leadership skills.

- Apply and extend your content knowledge and pedagogical skills through the examination of curriculum and instruction issues and research.

- Continue to develop your technology skills.

Entry Requirements

1. Complete requirements for a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

2. Possess or be eligible for a Professional Level Five Certificate in Reading Education. Candidates who have completed all eligibility requirements for the Professional Level Five Certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain the certificate.

3. Present a 3.25 or higher GPA on all graduate work attempted.

4. Present current official report from the verbal, quantitative and analytical writing sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) showing competitive scores. Applicants with a Georgia Southern University graduate degree showing a GPA of 3.5 or higher within the previous seven (7) years may exempt the GRE test requirement.

5. Submit a personal statement of purpose, not to exceed 200 words, that identifies the applicant’s reasons for pursuing graduate study and how admission into the program relates to the applicant’s professional aspirations.

6. Submit a completed ‘Disclosure and Affirmation Form’ that addresses misconduct disclosure, criminal background check, the Code of Ethics for Educators, and tort liability insurance.

Applicants may be approved for provisional admission based on the quality of the admission material presented. This advanced degree program, also available at our Manchester, N.H., campus, gives you in-depth knowledge of literacy issues and insight into specialized support and diagnostic procedures for students with reading issues.

Encouraging your students to explore methods of reading, writing, listening, and speaking development in the early elementary grades is essential to a successful classroom environment. When you have students with unique literacy needs, diverse teaching instruction can be critical to their success.

Whether taken on campus or online, the Curriculum and Instruction MEd with a concentration in Reading includes 11 courses, three of which comprise the Reading concentration.

This degree is ideal for licensed teachers seeking an additional endorsement. This program does not lead to initial licensure.

Students enrolled in the on campus and online Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading concentration program may be eligible for New Hampshire certification as a curriculum administrator or may elect to not seek state certification. If you are interested in obtaining state certification outside of New Hampshire, check with your state’s Department of Education to ensure New Hampshire certification is recognized in your home state.

1. Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction — Emphasis Children's Literature

If you are a teacher or librarian, this program can help you encourage young students to master their reading skills.

2. Graduate Certificate in Children’s Literature

This program is designed to expand your knowledge of children's literature through the writings of classic and contemporary authors. You’ll also have the opportunities to explore picturebooks, myths and folktales for children, cultural pluralism, and writing for children. All credits earned in this certificate may be applied toward a master’s degree, upon your admission into that program.

Entry Requirements

For admission to the Graduate School, an applicant must hold either (1) a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution or (2) a tertiary (postsecondary) degree that is deemed comparable to a four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited U.S. institution. This degree must be from an officially recognized degree-granting institution in the country in which it operates.

All applicants are expected to have earned a junior/senior grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

International applicants

All international applicants must take and submit scores for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System), with the exceptions noted below. The minimum acceptable score for the TOEFL is 550 for the paper-based test, or a total score of 80 with a 19 on the speaking section for the internet-based test (iBT). Applicants with iBT speaking scores between 15 and 18 may be considered for provisional admission, which requires completion of specified remedial English courses ESL 114G (American Oral English for Academic Purposes) and/or ESL 116G (ESL/Composition for Academic Disciplines) and attainment of a grade of B or higher. The minimum acceptable composite score for the IELTS is 6.5. Graduate programs may have more stringent requirements.
