This Faculty of Arts interdisciplinary programs allows students to study Canada from a full range of disciplinary perspectives. It examines both the past and the present from political, economic, social and cultural disciplinary perspectives. Courses that focus on Canada in the Faculty of Arts are drawn from Anthropology, Economics, English, French, History, Icelandic, Labour Studies, Political Studies, Religion, Slavic Studies and Sociology. In addition, certain courses in other faculties including Art History and Geography and Environment, are also available form Canadian Studies credit.

Entry Requirements

Direct entry option
1. Manitoba high school graduation, with five full credits at the Grade 12 level, in courses designated S, G or U.
2. A minimum 85% average over the following, with no less than 60% in each course:
o English 40S
o A second 40S or 40U course
o A third 40S or 40U course
This entry option is open to high school students or high school graduates who have not completed any university or college courses. Specific program requirements will vary; details of these requirements are available on each program’s application page.

Advanced entry option
24 credit hours in U1 (or approved bachelors program)
This entry option is open to students who have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours of university level study. Specific program requirements will vary; details of these requirements are available on each program's application page.
High school prerequisites
High school prerequisites: none
Many programs will require or recommend specific high school courses over and above their admission requirements. These high school prerequisites are not always required to enter the program, but they must be completed to enrol in certain university courses within it. If a student does not have a particular prerequisite when they enter the program, they may complete an equivalent upgrading course at university that will satisfy the prerequisite requirement.

Athabasca University offers a concentration in Canadian Studies for students who want to focus their studies on Canada. The purpose of the concentration is to insure that students are exposed to a variety of disciplinary perspectives on Canadian issues and also that their overall program has both breadth and depth. Students who take this concentration will have learned a great deal about Canadian history, literature, geography, politics and government, and Native and ethnic studies as well as having opportunities to study other aspects of Canada's present and past.

Entry Requirements

• Students are not permitted to obtain a second undergraduate degree in the same field or related field as their first undergraduate degree. Students who have completed a previous undergraduate degree must enter the second undergraduate Bachelor of Arts four-year degree and follow these regulations. The English writing skills requirement is waived for students enrolling in the second undergraduate degree.
• Students in the Bachelor of Arts program, as either a first or second undergraduate degree, generally have the option to combine two majors if they wish. Students who undertake double majors must fulfill all requirements for both majors. Depending upon the majors chosen, this may greatly restrict course selection (particularly in the second undergraduate degree program) or require the completion of more than 120 credits. Students considering enrolling in double majors should consult with an Athabasca University advisor for assistance in selecting their programs and courses.
• You may change majors at any time. You will be placed in the current regulations. If you wish to remain in the regulations that were in effect at the time of your original enrolment, contact Admissions and Evaluations Services. Please reference the appropriate Calendar, e.g., 2002-2003 regulations. To request a change of major, complete and submit a new Undergraduate General Application Form. No fees are required.
• The degree conversion provision is available to Athabasca University students who have been awarded a three-year AU degree and wish to convert to a four-year degree. For more information about this regulation, please review the Degree Conversion Provision Policy
• In addition to completing this degree through online and distance learning, students have the option to take Bachelor of Arts courses in a classroom setting at several institutions. See Learning Services Collaborations for partners.
• Students majoring in Canadian studies must demonstrate oral proficiency in French and/or one of Canada’s Aboriginal languages (for example Cree or Inuktitut). Students may meet the language requirement by completing 6 junior (200 level) credits in French and/or one of Canada’s Aboriginal languages. These courses will not count towards the major in Canadian Studies but will count towards the total number of credits required for the degree.

Students working toward a Canadian Studies major should meet the language requirement before completing 30 credits with Athabasca University. Students enrolled in an after-degree program are advised to select courses within the following four subareas that fulfill the Humanities, Science, and Social Science requirements as well as the subarea requirements. Failure to do so could result in a student being required to complete more than 60 credits in order to fulfill all of the regulations.

The Department of American and Canadian Studies has a vibrant and fast-growing postgraduate community. The Department draws on the research interests and projects of our staff in postgraduate teaching and on contributions from staff in allied Departments at University of Birmingham.

The MA by Research programme requires you to prepare a dissertation of up to 40,000 words on a topic of your choice, for which an academic staff member will provide expert supervision.

The PhD – the most advanced research degree - leads to a dissertation of up to 80,000 words on a subject of your choice and under the expert supervision of an academic member of staff.
You can study for a PhD on campus or by Distance Learning.

We have recognised research strengths in the fields of urban culture and representation, US foreign policy and intelligence services, literary and cultural studies, film and visual studies and African American studies. Our 30 credit totally online Master of Arts in Environmental Practice degree prepares students to advance their career and to contribute positively to finding solutions for environmental problems.
